What 9mm ammo to use?

I am just wondering what is the "standard" cheap ammo to use, if there is one.

My RPAL came in the mail recently and I can finally actually go and buy my first handgun. It will either be a Sig 226 or CZ SP-01 Shadow. 9mm for sure. I am still trying to find a way to try the Shadow before I buy, no luck so far.

So, what I don't understand is can I shoot whatever grain I want in the Sig or CZ? (115/124/147). Is there anything to avoid?

I see that wholesale sports has "American Eagle 9mm Luger" in the above 3 grains for either $13.99 or $14.99. That is $10 cheaper per box than range ammo.

I also found this stuff in 1000 round increments but it's only 115gr, again, not sure if that matters:

I am very new to the hobby, and am just looking for the cheapest way to get a bunch of reliable ammo to start me out. I am in Calgary, AB if that matters.

Or similar to the WOLF but closer and available for p/u (shipping $ adds up real quick) is BDX out of black diamond. TSE and pro-line both have it on occasion but does sell quick.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, I have a couple questions though. Does it matter what grain I use? 115, 124, or 147? If I'm just at the range I don't think it would matter to me much as long as the gun doesn't care.

Also, I think The Shooting Edge only allows lead rounds being an indoor range, I didn't think "TMJ" ammo was all lead. I assume pure lead ammo is fine for the CZ or Sig also.

all pistol ammo is allowed at TSE except for the 7.62x25 Tokarev surplus stuff.

Oh, I thought you couldn't use FMJ/TMJ at TSE?

It sure would be nice to get some sort of jacketed round so that my fingers aren't covered in lead all the time...would TMJ solve that problem?

EDIT: Just realized the minimum shipping charge is about $30, might be better off just buying local if I can find some in stock.

I stick with 124gr for 9mm...

If you get a CZ buy a box to try out at first, factory ammo should be fine but it can be picky about reloads. I heard wolf doesn't work too well in 75b.

make sure you only look at the UPS line for shipping rates, since Canada Post can't be used for ammo (even though the SFRC online calculator does show it).

Good to know - thanks. How about the Sig 226, will it just eat anything or is it picky about certain ammo as well?
 
The 2 "standard" bullet weights for 9mm are 115 and 124grn. Either of those should do well in either pistol. The 147 is relatively recent and if the gun likes it, it can do great things (accuracy wise) but not all guns like 147 grn and it's more of an individual gun thing than a brand thing. Either of the 2 pistols you have named will be safe and function properly with any commercial 9mm load (including factory +P).

Thank you for clearing that up. So the cheap but still OEM ammo like American Eagle should be fine? That looks like my best bet for a local source to get me going until I can get a line on a 1000rd box.

the one I had was picky about my reloads and I never tried factory. they are supposed to be pretty reliable tho. If you want 'eat anything' kind of gun Beretta in my experience is the best in the category.

The new Wolf that I am getting in tomorrow will work fine in CZ's. I will be putting it online tomorrow afternoon. That being said there may be a slight price increase as the new projectiles cost abit more. I won't know until tomorrow if that is the case.

To be specific, the only ammo that you cannot shoot at TSE (or most indoor ranges for that matter) is steel core or steel jacketed ammo. The sparks that can be created can be a very serious fire hazard.

Yes, TMJ is still a jacketed ammunition (even more so than FMJ) and your fingers will not be directly touching raw lead. It is still a good though to wash your hands thoroughly after shooting as you are always subject to some lead residue when shooting.
