I'm interested in picking up a stainless guide gun to bring along for life insurance on canoe trips. What is the accuracy like in these 18 1/2" barreled guide guns? I'd like to actually hunt with it too if I'm going to buy one.

Your comments please.

I get a 3 shot group at 100 yds with my reloads, you can cover with a quarter. I sight it in 3" high and am good to about 175 yds.
I use a Leupold VX-II in 1-4X, most excellent close to mid range combo.

I have one and love it. Same scope set up as Ranger Rick but the mounts I use are Weaver Pivot. Allows me to use the iron sights, if needed. 350gr Hornady handloads work well, as do the 400gr Speer,:D my favorite. Just in the process of trying out cast GC bullets, for 'playing' with. My only complaint, I would prefer the pistol grip butt stock & curved lever as on the standard Model 1895. As is, with the heaver bullets and hotter loads, the lever 'bites' the hand a little.;)

Never mind, I went to the marlin sight and found out it has ballard rifling, one other question, are these availible in Canada yet? http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/xlr/1895XLR.aspx

Yes, they are available in Canada. Got mine @ Island Outfitters in Victoria. There is a guy in Ladysmith that I believe has one for sale. If you're interested, send a message.

Mine shot under an inch out of the box with factory ammo. The only downside is that with the standard model you have to get a new front post if you load any real screamers.

When I had my Guide Gun, I ordered several different height fiber optic front sights from Western Gun Parts in Edmonton. Makes fast target aquisition a breeze when used with a peep...KF

I picked the 1895, 22" barrel version for faster bullet speed. The best I get from reloads is 1.5" with 2-7X scope and 300 gr bullets (Not sure if it was the Hornady or Remington bulk bullets).

It is my bush gun for moose hunts with 350 gr Hornady and Holosight.
