What about the 6.5-06?

I'm kind of itching for a wildcat and was wondering about the 6.5-06. Do you think there are any real advantages to this over existing factory calibres? Would I base it on the a 25-06 necked up? I'm thinking of boring out a 25-06 to 6.5-06 if I decide to go ahead with it but I'm not sure if there is enough of an advantage over the .270 Winchester.

Best regards,

The 6.5 bullets have greater sectional density then the .277 bullets!

I love the 6.5 swede but have no experence with the 6.5.06!

NO

if I decide to go ahead with it but I'm not sure if there is enough of an advantage over the .270 Winchester.

There isn't

but.......

WHO CARES.... my 280AI can be duplicated by a 7 SAUM and a factory loaded 7 Rem Mag, and my 7-08AI is essentially a 284 Win........

It's what makes you a gun nut, and justification is not needed (or we'd all be shooting 30-06's with 165gr TSX's until the day we die...

Variety is the spice of life... BUILD IT!!!!!

Of course, a 280AI would be a better choice (grin).

Ballistically, there is a significant difference between the 6.5 and 270 beyond 500yds. If you don't intend on shooting/hunting that far, pick whatever floats your boat.

Think of the 6.5-06 as a 260 Rem "Magnum". Most 6.5-06 rifles will get pretty close to the 264Win mag in performance.

I find it comes very close to the 264 win. I have both and have hunted with both of them. My 264 is a Doumalin and the 6.5 06 is a custom Mauser. In my oppinion it would be an improvement on your 25.06. I have a cpl of 257 Ackleys that pretty much duplicate th 25.06 and in the field I would deffinatly lean more toward the 6.5's. 140 speers have been my bullet of choice for both of them and I have never been dissapointed with the result. That being said, I have only used them for whitetail and muledeer.
Nice wildcat 30.06 brass is cheap and pleantiful and dies should not be too expensive.

If you have the itch, have at er.

Absolutely. I love any configuration of the 6.5 mm and have a couple of varieties. Have been thinking of a 6.5-06 for a while, and IMHO think stretching a 25-06 would be easiest. Let us know how it works out! :D

the 6.5-284 is supposed to be one of the more popular long range target rounds. I have had a hankerin' for a 6.5 for a while now, if I was to build I'd probably do the 6.5-284, but the 6.5-06 is good too.

When it comes to gun stuff there is very little new under the sun but there are plenty cool things that don't come from a factory. If you like it do it ,yes it may not do anything the 270 can't but does it matter.

Bob Pastor set an Iowa State 1000 yard bench rest record with a 6.5-06. 2.626" group at 1000 yards with a light gun. Pipe it anytime here if I am wrong Bob. He has also has some success with it here in Canada shooting F Class. A few other have tried it, but Bob won't tell them all his secrets.

I've always had a "thing" :D for the 6.5 diameter bullet, I just likes 'em;) . Well at the moment the only thing that I own that fits that bill is a .264 Win mag, great cartridge as far as I'm concerned but as a true gun nut I need more. I recently picked up a stainles classic Winchester with intensions of rebarreling it and making a 6.5 wsm, but it's been temporarily been put on hold. The first project in line is now a 6.5/06 AI. I've got the reamer for it, and will start gathering the action, barrel etc. I probably won't get the real work for it started until after the fall.............hunting season;) :D

Will it do anything my 25/06, 25/06 AI, .264 Win mag., .270's, 7x64, or 280 AI won't? Of course it will, it will temporarily satisify my appetite for owning new and different rifles:p :D :p
