What about the old 303!!!!

Yeah, there is a No.1-A .303 in the EE right now... only $2200... lol.

When Ruger announced the production run of those I thought ' helluva an idea, I need one ! ' so with that in mind I joined in with all the other 'nutters and bought one.
Nicely finished, it shot fair to middln' but it just was not comfortable for me did not fit right but the real capper was one day at the range my R10 Ross Sporter shot a tighter more consistent group on three different targets...shocked I was.
Next range trip and being intentionally careful Mr. Ross again outshot Mr. Ruger, so after the dust settled the Ruger was swapped away.
Now and without regret my old Ross carries the flag for the 303 British cartridge for me.

I can still remember a 45 gallon barrel of jungle carbines at the end of the counter at the Woolworths store for $29. That was a LOT of peoples first hunting rifle

My experience is the same as yours Kevan. At the range, whether the Ruger is wearing a skinner peep or a scope, both of my sportered Ross MkIII's ,using the original battle sights, will out shoot the Ruger.
That being said, as a hunting rifle, the Ruger is a treat to carry in the field and has better balance than my Ross MkIII's. However, one little gem bests them all as a hunting rifle. It is my Ross 1905R factory sporter in 303 Brit.
To keep this thread on track, as a kid living in NB, I used to hunt on my grandfather's farm and surrounding areas. The ONLY caliber available to me was 303 British, but I had a choice of rifles to use it in including a Ross 1905 R, a model 95 Winchester, a sportered P14 and a sportered LE No1 Mk III. Ammo was inexpensive as were rifles, especially milsurps. The caliber was well proven as a fine choice for deer, moose or bear. It still is today and whether I carry a Ross or the Ruger, I feel very confident in both the rifle and the 303 British caliber they are chambered for.

A buddy of mine had an M10 sporter with the full length barrel that could smack a 4" gong with boring regularity at 200 yds. with the issue sights. The cool part about it is he got it in trade for a dildo! No foolin'.:)

A Ross is definitely the .303 for accuracy.

Well THAT'S a first! :sok2

A rifle for a dildo! :runaway:

I was searching for something in the shop last week and found a full box of Imperial 303 shells for $15.39. I wonder when they were bought?

Kevin

I think my Dad bought a Jungle Carbine in 1964 and the hardware store clerk gave him a box of either Dominion or Imperial that was priced at $4.95.
I know the rifle was $19.00.

303 Imperial for 15.39, are not really very old.
Plus, are they CIL Imperial, or IVI imperial. I will guess they are IVI. I don't want to burst your bubble, but IVI is about the worst factory ammunition I have ever used.
If they are CIL Imperial they will be among the last made by Dominion Ammunition and excellent cartridges.

Agreed. I never had much 'luck' with it either.

Yer sure right about IVI loads compared to CIL.:) IVI stands for " Impact Varies Indeterminately";)

Give me any old 30-30 Marlin/Win instead.
At least I know it has not been through two world wars (generous chamber) & numerous smaller adventures.

I love these old sporters! In fact I was gonna make a thread about them!? But I saw the last one degenerate so...
The one on the left is my "main" bush rifle. I love it! It handles and points like a dream!
The other ones are both Churchills and the one has Parker hale bases and rings just waiting for a old weaver. Lol

They're great for staking up the tomatoes, especially if they have a bayonet. There, now you've been officially abused.:p

yeh I had a t3 in 308 an the #1 in 303, I too figured I would just pump the #1 up a bit , scope it and try to hit em on the first shot in the right spot.

sold the 308... bought a 7mm08 :)

So, I had my M1910 Ross in 303 British out today for 'graphing, and groups.
Trying a couple of new load recipes with the 180 Sierra Pro-Hunter. [IVI 01 cases, CCI 200]

Tried 45 and 46 grains of Vihtavuori N540; 47 and 48 grains of Ramshot Big Game.
The heavier loads with both powders are the tickets in this Ross.

The Big Game at 48 grains, chronographs 2585 and the 3-shot group is .73" C to C.
The N540 was even better, with 2625 and a tiny 3 - shot group of just .30" Shot the last two rounds
of this load at another target....they are touching. :) Looking mighty fine.

Checked the 7mm SAUM also. 150 Scirocco II in front of 65 grains of Reloder 25, fired by a CCI 250.
2925 fps and 3 - shot group at .59"

Finally, I reaffirmed the Marlin 336A [24" barrel] 30-30. WW case, Fed 210, 36.0 Leverevolution, 160 FTX.
2415 fps, and right about where it usually shoots....3 shots just under 1 moa. [I have 2 Marlins that shoot that way]

Things are ready for the season....Going to take something with my Ross this fall. Dave.
