What about the old classics?

I've got a good spread of old an new, from 303 Brit to 375 RUM.

I find newer powders and bullets really juice up older cartridges for hunting, and bring some of the oldies screaming back to life.

I use the 6.5x55 and even older,

the 8x57mm Mauser,and oldest of all,

I prefer to hunt with a muzzle loader. .50 cal, 370 grain TC maxi ball though I use Pyrodex not real black.

This fall I will be carrying a 308 Win, a 30-06 and a 270 Win...I plan to take each afield at least once...all are Pre'64 Model 70's

....if it rains I'll carry a stainless 700 in 7 Mag...who am I kidding?..if it rains I'll likely throw another log on and crack open the Baileys.....

Almost all of my hunting rifles are chambered in older non magnum calibers. I find that these old cartridges are very effective especially when loaded with modern bullets like the Barnes TSX or Nosler Partition. These old cartridges offer less recoil and blast. Some of my favorites include the .257 Roberts, .30-06, 8mm mauser, 9.3x62, 6.5x55, and 45-70. All are in mauser style bolt actions and have been used on all types of game.

Most of my favourite rifle cartridges are in the "old" category: .303 British, .30-06 Springfield, 7.92x57mm Mauser, .375 H&H Magnum, .416 Rigby, and .45-70 Government.

I like a lot of old calibers, I even load black powder cartridges for 45-70 and 577/450 but have absolutely no time for the 303 British.

Holding a piece older than you that shoots really well is a delightful thing. You are holding history. They all shoot extremely well too by the way and have not been touched by a smith in a long long time.

short cartridges or Rem.ultra mags.

Well, now that I'm older, I've consolidated a bit.

Moose: 6.5 x 55 Swede

Deer: 6.5 x 55 Swede

Wolf/coyote: 6.5 x 55 Swede

And, I've got an ancient 16 gauge Savage dbl barrel that is just the cat's arse on skunks and coons.

Mind you, I've still got my old 30-06, a 7mm Rem. Mag on ice, my old .303, and a new Savage 243 - but as far as huntin' goes I'm pretty well a one rifle fellow nowadays.

I still use my old 12 gauge Wingmaster and my BSA .22. for all the "other" stuff.

After that he bought me a Brno in 8X57 21H double set triggers.
Need to dust that one off. Never shot anything with that one. Bad carma.
Two that I use are both 308's. Big and little brothers.
Ruger 308 win and his big brother 308 Norma Mag Schultz & Larsen.
Run the same bullet down both barrels.
Have the 6.5X55 Swede as well as a bunch of other old timers, 250-3000, 30-30, and have the desire not to quit buying.
Ammo and firearms are good clean fun...imho anywayz.

I'm also one of older fellow's,my all time favorite is an 1894 winchester in 38-55. I'm not short of rifles i just like packing that old gun. 44-40 8mm 303 in a jungle carbine

Good choice. I have the same and it's my favorite 30 cal magnum.

I have a number of sporting arms but am partial to the .270 Win which I have 3 of. My favorite is an old gun; a Carl Gustav with a 24 inch barrel and a 2.5-8 Scope Chief scope. Both the gun and the scope are from my youth which are very nostalgic to me. I shot a 165 Whitetail last year at 400 meters which just tickled me.

I've been hunting and shooting for a few years and one of the big gaps in my calibre selection has been the 270 Win. With that in mind, following the purchase of a Husqvarna in 358NM from Why not?, I've also very recently purchased a Husqvarna in 270 Win from him. I 'needed' it.

All my hunting this year will be done with a .250 Savage and a .38-55 Winchester. All I need. If I was going for moose or elk, I'd pack my 9.3 x 64mm Brenneke, which came out around 1912, so it's an oldie too.
