what about the restricted .223/5.56

Unless you have access to an approved range that permits hunting and is frequented by game.

The AR-15 springs to mind, in various versions, including Remington's new R-15. Ruger recently announced a variant with a piston mechanism, their SR556. The original Armalite AR-180, produced under license by a few manufacturers and as far as I know, not currently being built by anyone, is restricted, unlike the current production AR-180B which should be listed in that other thread. You can trawl the interweb for semi-autos and generally expect that if they look military, they are probably restricted or prohibited here, and because of the size of our market, importers won't bother bringing a lot of them in.

So if a deer wanders across your range... is that hunting?

I guess the answer is if there is open season for rifle and you have your hunting license with a deer tag with you at the time the deer show up at the range (based on what TheTooner said the range permits hunting) I guess you are legal to use your black rifle to shoot that particular unlucky deer!:D
