I have a CM PacNor in a 10 twist #1 contour 284 bore and a new 280 Rem reamer and gauges......

I have a couple of very nice older CM 700's that I could rebarrel to 280 but I want something different....after owning almost 100 700's I think I'm due for a change....I'm leaning to a controlled feed action of some type.

Pre'64 M70's are almost impossible to find for less than a grand.....and most need a new stock at that price or at least refinishing..I looked at a new CZ but they don't have very nice wood,.....the blued M70 Classics seem to have dried up....I thought of a Husqvarna but I don't like the trigger, you can put a Bold trigger on them but the safety lever looks out of place....I haven't seen an Interarms MarkX for a while now...and the new Rem 798 is out of the question......I've checked out Montana actions and the reports are not good....I won't use a military '98...hate the thumb cut....an FN Browning would be nice but they are hard to find.....

any suggestions?

I don't know Rick, I've handled a few of the Montana actions and they seem decent to me. What was the problem exactly? I know they're not the slickest finished actions around, but I find them pretty solid. Or how about a Ruger 77? I really like the old tang safety versions, especially once you slim down that clubby stock. A Howa? BSA maybe? - dan

Brownell' list the CZ550 action @ $550. I don't think you could go wrong with a Husqvarna FN action and just put whatever trigger on it you want.

Rick, if I were you, I would build on a Husqvarna, either the FN series 50 and 51, or their small ring commercial action. They are among the best of the CF actions, and make very fine, lighweight rifles.

I have one of the small ring models with an adjustable trigger on it from the factory. They were imported by Tradewinds in the 60s, and are as good as any Timney or Bold.

Also, I have a Jaeger trigger that will fit any FN or Husqvarna action if decide to use one of them.

Rick,Richard has that pre 64 .300H&H of mine,(at least I think he does,we haven't squared up for it yet!)The barrel & stock are crap, but the action is good.Give him a call, maybe he still has it.Regards,Mur

Rick,

A local gun shop has had a M70 standard rifle in 30-06 for a long time. Let me check it out and see if it's still there, and what kind of a price is on it. Seems to me it's about $700. Stay tuned...
