What age is appropriate to start shooting

it's irresponsible not to mention that LEAD is much more dangerous to developing brains. I would wait as long as I could for that reason.

It's irresponsible not to teach children about firearms if you have them in your house, the sooner the better. LEAD is much more dangerous to developing brains (one reason lead was removed fuel), and second hand smoke is much more dangerous to their health as is off gassing of many items in your home.

I'm of the understanding that lead is almost completely harmless until it is ingested, where it reacts with the digestive acids in a living creature's body. I mean...I don't let my kids hold a few spare airgun pellets in their mouths like I did when I was a kid from time to time (yeah...I know :) ) but still.. We have a strict "no eating/hands or fingers in the mouth" policy until hands have been washed with warm soapy water.

6yrs old. Old enough to know that this is an activity just like riding a bike or playing baseball, that people shoot in competitions, or for fun, that this activity has safety rules which must be followed all the time to keep everybody safe, and that shooting paper targets and clay pigeons is good, while shooting people is very bad (we'll deal with the "yah buts" of good guys and bad guys a bit later, when he's old enough to talk about defense, judgement, and restraint).

Any age with adult supervision as long as the kid shows some respect for firearms and will listen. If not then they are too young.

Couldn't agree more and if the truth was known that is sound advice for anyone of any age,I know a few so called adults that are somewhat "too young".

I've been pondering this question myself. My little girl is three and is constantly looking over my shoulder and showing interest in firearms while I'm surfing CGN, looking at firearms online or come home in duty gear. So far I've only explained to her that they are tools and I would show her how they work and what they do when she is old enough. I want to foster the interest though as I think it could be an enjoyable way to spend some quality time with her.

Better get executive approval first but there might be a daisy or rascal in her near future...

I think that as soon as they start showing interest you should trach them to shoot. My three daughters all started when they were 6-7 years old. their schedules are much busy now as they are all in university/college but we still love to shoot together when time allows.

You cannot overstress safety when teaching you kids to shoot. Have fun.

Mine started at 5 with us holding the 10/22 and her pulling the trigger. Once we had her hooked into shooting stuff that falls over, we introduced ACTS & PROVE with rewards for doing it successfully. After a discussion with a friend of ours who is anti and doesn't want her (9 & 12) kids round guns, she had the opportunity to watch our 5yr old bring out her new Savage Cub with pink thumbhole stock (because it is a GIRLS gun, not a boys gun...) and do ACTS & PROVE before offering it to our friend to hold. Something right there changed our friends mind about guns...

I concur that only the parent knows the child well enough to decide but gun safety should be on the agenda right from the start.

My boy started with a Henry mini bolt at age 4 and my girl started with a nice pink cricket at 6 just be with them and nothing can happen if you do your part it's all about education and patience don't expect tight groups at that age but get the basic started

I started my daughter on a pump action paintball gun when she was six. I introduced it like it was a true firearm. We hunt european wall lizards in the backyard. Fun, safe, and reduces an invasive species. She is seven now, and we are working with a pellet gun. Grey squirrels beware!

Depends on where you live maybe:

I started at 4 when my "cool uncle" Uncle Steve, who rode a motorcycle and was bald, which made him totally awesome. Got me a Daisy BB gun, and me and my Dad and Uncle Steve went and shot it in the back yard.

My oldest got her 1998 daisy at age 4. Shoots .22 with my help. Youngest is almost 3 and shoots a nerf sxs like a champ.

Oldest is 5 still not showing a huge interest but likes to play. Starting to understand how to line up her sights.
