I see so many milsurps on the EE that are ALREADY SPORTERIZED, and tradex that are going for CHEAP

I want a bolt action rifle to cut the barrel down, that i can sling across my back when up north in the brush.... I want something versatile,

I want something with a smaller caliber, less than 0.275" diameter, that I can use on small animals (coyotes) or maybe even deer...

I was thinking of an m96 in 6.5x55, does anyone have any suggestions? I would like something I could put a scout mount on, but thats not too important.

anyone have any suggestions on rifles or vendors?

Lots of 6.5x55mm Norwegian Krag Sporters floating around.

Great handy, light rifle, smooth action, and too costly to afford to desporterize!!:D

That would be my choice with your specs, as eventually, every sporter I ever buy, ends up becoming a restoration project....

Keep your eyes on the EE, or put out a WTB ad. Don't know of any dealers who may have one in stock right now though...

Perhaps one of the sportered Swede Mausers that Trade Ex carries if nothing else...?

"...the Krags valuable?..." Depends on what has been done to it. Desert Fox's is too far gone. A rifle that has only had the stock altered, not so much.
You should probably re-think an 18.5" barrel. Muzzle flash and blast will be astounding. And you'd lose a lot of velocity.

T'was not mine... just stole the pic off the interwebz! :p

I love messing around with old sporterized military rifles-they have already lost their virginity so if you can clean it up, restock it-slim it down, put new sights on it-add a recoil pad-whatever it takes to make a fine hunting rifle-go for it.

And if some ''purist'' looks down their nose at you-so what?its YOUR rifle. It wasn't so long ago that''sporterized'' lee enfields were putting much appreciated meat on the table -and still do.

If anybody is so disgusted with their ''sporterized'' 8x54 rolling block that they just can't stand owning it,then send it to me-I'll take it off your hands and I'll even pay the shipping

ps-I have 6 ''sporterized'' husqvarnas from TRADEEX and they're very fine hunting rifles...some people[me included] even think the machine work and finishing is better than many modern''sporting''rifles, and I'm telling you-a nice 6.5x55 swede can't be beat for value-or a deer rifle

a 6.5 swede hard to beat, good all the up to moose and the 6.5 bullet is long and stable it also penetrates like crazy. a guy named bell killed a boatload of elephants with a 6.5 . the XS sights scout mount is outstanding and easy to install

I think it partially depends on your exact purposes.

I've been carrying a 6.5 swede for hunting, but for a bush gun I would almost be inclined to pick up an enfield or sks.

The swedes are great, but not priced to be beaters - I like my swede to the degree I won't put it in certain situations because I don't want to rough up the bluing, ding the wood or give it water damage.

My enfield by contrast, has sportered wood and a spare set in my closet, battle sights that're already nicked and scarred, and no bluing to speak of - and cost me less than a third of what my swede did.

I'd also consider an sks for just dicking around. It'll do most of what the enfield and swede will do, and some things better, plus it's compact, light and can take a ton of abuse.

An M38 Swede Mauser is a very handy rifle for carrying all day and you don't have to sporter it, just use it as it comes. Though I agree with H Wally and would suggest a sportered Enfield instead if you are going to beat it to death.

You can knock almost a pound off the weight of an SKS just by removing that silly toad-stabber.

OR you could go the Carcano route, get a TS model (21-inch barrel) or Carbine (17-1/2") and feed it with 4198 powder to eliminate that horrendous flash/muzzle blast. Works, I know. I use 4198 in my own Carbine and in the TS. Nice, mild-mannered little rifles and no need to chop anything; the Carbines mostly had those switchblade bayonets removed before they were sold here, back in the '60s. There's nuthin LEFT to chop!!! Good coyote rifles, too..... and Trade-Ex has the Hornady 160-grainer .268 slugs AND brass. Load damn FAST with that 6-round clip, too, unload just as fast.

Cheap like borschdt, too.

Think about it.

Get a Number 5 (right now they're cheap) don't sporterize it. As far as thin skinned game goes, load 123 grain softpoints (762x39) in .303 brass with a light load and you're golden. Plus there's nothing that hasn't already been killed by a 303, so you don't have any worries for bigger stuff.
