I have had my AR for a few months now and want to change out the flash suppressor on it. It is a regular A2 style flash hider with crush washer.

I can't for the life of me get it off, excuse my ignorance but to get it off, like any screw its lefty-loosy, righty-tighty correct? I don't really want to spend 70 dollars on a vise block so I can put my upper in the vise... is that my only option? I have been trying but to no avail...

Please help me! :)

its highly, highly recommended that you get a vise block to clamp that upper (if its that tight)

while its possible to take it off without one, its not trivial. you'll probably have to sit on or get a friend to step on your upper too keep it from moving while its wrenched off.

taking flash hiders, barrel nuts off with a vise is easy peasy

Are you sure it is not welded on? If not, useing a paded vice, clamp the barrel at the front sight and wrench the hider off then. ARE YOU SURE IT'S NOT WELDED ON?

The best way is to use a barrel vice block - not an upper vice block, to remove flash suppressor. The A2 should be torqued to about 16 ft-lb. With the proper tool, it is super easy.

What would a weld pin look like? I don't think it is welded, plus the previous owner told me it was not welded on... But so I need a barrel vise?

Scratch that, I put it in the vise with some gloves wrapped around the barrel to protect it and just went to town, thought I was going to break the table the vise was attached too before the flash hider would come off but it came off!!

Next step is to remove the FSB which also seems to be on there quite good, pins aren't budging when I use a hammer and a punch... Oh well I'll have to just get aggressive with it again haha

Thanks again guys!

If your going to work on stuff alot, buy the barrel vice blocks. Brownells has them. Working with the correct tools makes this job so much easier.

does anyone know if the Norc's are welded or pinned?

I'm not sure but I would hazard a guess that they would not be pinned because to my understanding the reason some are pinned is because of U.S. export restrictions? Just my guess anyways...
