I have been looking around online to figure out what ammo is the best to use in my new XCR. The rifle has a 1:9" twist and for normal lead-core jacketed 223 ammo I think I can shoot up to a max of 73gr bullets?? Anyone have any suggustions on what gr. or brand to use in the following two situations.

1. Target practice

2. hunting

Any help would be great.

If you had 1:7 you would be good with a heavier bullet. As the 2nd number gets bigger the lower the grain you should shoot. Not saying it wont work just wont be as accurate. Shoot up to 62, be best probably around that and 55.

55gr winchester white box or American Eagle(commonly called dirty bird). The AE 55gr FMJBT is excellent for targets. Not bad on small critters, not as good as ballistic tips or soft points.

Ya make sure you keep your mouth closed while shooting the AE stuff. I bought a case of 500 of the 55Gr FMJBT which is almost done save 4 boxes. Anyways this stuff is Lake City MFG, with crimped in primers and a NATO headstamp. I'd like to chrony it just to see but whatever its great.

Horrible smell/taste tho. Relatively cheap at 204 after tax however I am going to get some WWB 223 sooner or later. 2400 rounds for 800 bucks is not THAT bad.

The brass is headstamped as NATO pressures but it isn't. There is a thread on this over at AR15.com. Its sad when we think $0.33/round is cheap. What are our friends to the south paying? $150/1000 I think.

People in the US are LUCKY to find 1K of decent stuff such as Federal or WWB for $300/1000 let alone $150. The average prices per 1K are about 320-400 it seems. They are paying about $6-8 per box of $20 and thats just M193.

The main issue they are having is that no one has any .223 in stock, everyone is back ordered or OOS. We actually have it pretty good up here in regards to availability and pricing.

Thanks for all the knowledgeable replies guys. I'm going to go to a few shops in Vancouver this weekend and see what they have in stock.

You must have one of them there magic rifles.... Or, you think 4" at 100 yards is good:D

I'd get some 68gr Hornady or 69gr Federal -- thats about the longest bullet (its the lenght - not the weight that is the issue with twist) in a match round that will fly reliably straight (some 1:9's will do 75 and 77gr BTHP's).

AE ammo is fine for plinking but its not match quality by far - for the most part it is a 3MOA ammo at best. Of course it depends as 667 said - what you consider to be good.

For Hunting the 64gr PSP ammo is a good choice as it will not fragment - like the FMJ and BTHP rounds will -- unless its strict varmit hunting -- then do what you want...

He might just be a decent shooter!:p
The AE stuff is decent at closer ranges, but back up past 300m and it falls to Sh!t. Same same for Winchester USA branded ammo.
I would highly recommend getting into handloading, If you care about going past 300m with any semblance of accuracy....69smk and varget will work well.

667,
Printing 4" groups like an SKS is not what I consider acceptable accuracy. I run my DB through my 14.5" AR so pinpoint olympic grade accuracy is not what I'm after. Engaging targets beyond 300 metres is a bit of a stretch for my setup although it can be done with regularity.

Your acceptable accuracy is dependent on your specific task. Most of my shooting requires greater speed over greater accuracy. Three gun matches aren't congruent with single hole groups. Most don't entail shooting beyond 100 yards.
