I ended up getting a Trius Trap 1 step for christmas, only problem is I know nothing about shooting clays. I have a couple boxes to burn thru, just wondering what the most common shot type is for shooting these things. Do they make ammo specifically for shooting clays, or should I just buy the cheapest stuff I can find for my 12ga??

For use with the Trius trap shoot whatever you have to get rid of and then the cheapest in the #7.5, 8 and 9 for clays. As to what to use for the clay target games many will use # 8 and #9 for skeet with 7.5 and 8 for trap and any combination depending on target presentation and choke used for Sporting Clays

If you are going to buy shells for shooting clay targets check our Cabelas or Wholesale Sports, as you can usually buy cheap target loads by the flat for under $60. I use #8 for for both trap and skeet. As well, 2-3/4 dram loads are plenty for what you are doing, and the recoil is lighter than the heavier loads.

In your situation I would not bother with the higher end target loads. I would buy, in my order of preference, Remington Gun Clubs, Federal Top Guns, or Winchester Super Targets. You can find them in 100 packs at Walmart or Canadian Tire. If you are going to shoot a little more than that consider a "flat" of 250 rounds from a larger sporting goods store. These are all steel headed shells that will work fine in most guns, but there have been reports with empty hulls sticking in newer Remington 870 Expresses. Look for shot sizes 7-1/2 or 8. There is no need for 1200 fps loads in 1-1/8 (so called 3 dram)for casual shooting. Look for 1145 fps in 1-1/8(so called 2-3/4 dram). If you can find a 1 ounce load at 1200 fps they are great target loads and a lot easier on your shoulder.

One caveat: If you are shooting a semi-auto, a minimum of 3 drams is usually required for reliable ejection and cycling with most guns.

We have a few people shooting the Browning Maxus or the Winchester SX-2/3 with 2-3/4 dram loads with no issues at all. The newer semi autos seem to be very reliable with the lighter loads.

As stubble jumper says, it depends on the gun. I've seen some inertia guns that required a heavier load, while some gas guns will cycle remarkably light loads. I normally use reloaded 1 oz @1180 fps loads in my 1100's and they cycle just fine. I've even run some of my 7/8 oz reloads through my trap gun when they were all I had left at the end of the day. They cycled just fine, crushed the birds and the lack of recoil was astonishing.

I have a newer semi that didn't like the light loads at first. However, after running a few hundred though her, she functions just fine. Needed a bit of break in period I guess.

like most guns they tend to require a heavier load initially and then pretty much runs anything after that.
My Benelli however runs light loads out of the box with no problems.
But my new a400 does not like the Winchester XPert loads at 1145fps. They are fine with the 1300fps loads though. We'll see how it does after a few more hundred rounds.
