I know that the barrel twist rate changes the type of ammo that the gun shoots best, but that's about all I know. Can someone give me a breakdown of what to consider when looking for accurate ammo with a 5.56 barrel twist of 1/7?

A 7 twist will pretty much shoot everything under the sun as far as .224 bullets go. You may have some troubles with stuff that is lighter than 50 grains, and pushing the higher velocities (over spinning and jackets peeling off in mid flight kind of issues), and at the other spectrum, custom bullets that are longer than a sierra 90 grain would likely need a 6.5 twist...but I'm guessing you wouldn't be going there anyhow.

You'll have guys coming on here shortly telling you 9 twists are the way to go....

Rule of thumb

1/7 - any weight

1/8 - up to ~80 gr

1/9 - up to ~70 gr

1/12 - up to ~60 gr

There are exceptions, I know some guys with 1/9 who can shoot 77 gr just fine. Some can't.

Beyond this, you'll have to experiment. No one twist shoots one bullet weight better in all cases.
