What ammo is issued to the Rangers that carry Enfields?

Cool.

Why are they issued ammo with SPs?

"Contrary to popular belief it is not a super-velocity cartridge and the official prohibition against its use in rifles and light automatic weapons stems only from the rapid barrel wear induced by the boattail projectile after the barrel has been used for Mark VII ammunition." Why does using the boattail bullet induce rapid barrel wear in a barrel which has been used for Mk. 7Z ammo?

We use 180gr softpoints to save asshats like this dum son'o'#####.
By the way these are the same people we end up looking for when we get the call from RCMP to go do some SAR...
More often than not they stand listening to you with an open gob glistening with drool.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Rangers. But sometimes I feel like god is testing me.

A flat based Mk. VII round upsets, and gives better obturation than the boattailed Mk. VIII. This was the thinking behind the Mk. VIII resulting in more bore erosion.
Why did the Gov't contract for Mk. VIII ammunition for the Rangers, when the rifles and their sights are intended to use Mk. VII? I have heard an explanation that indicates utter ignorance on the part of the person responsible for contracting.

Double base Cordite powder causes more bore erosion and single base powder has less bore erosion due to the lower burning peak flame temperature. (WWI and WWII) newer double powders now have a lower peak flame temperature due to additives and deterrent coatings. Double base Cordite powder had a higher percentage of nitroglycerin which burned hotter than "ANY" double base pistol powders made today. (this means a very high peak flame temperature and bore erosion)

The Mk.8z ammunition used a rebated boat tail bullet that "DID" obturate or fill the bore when kicked in the seat of the pants.

Below right from the manual. ;)

NOTE: Above 7. Winchester ammunition at that time was loaded with double base BL-C(2) powder and was not suitable for aircraft machine gun use because the double base powder burned hotter than single base powders and caused excessive bore erosion and short barrel life.

The Mk.8z ammunition was a rebated boat tail design.

What this means is a standard boat tail bullet will not shoot well in an Enfield rifle that has fired cordite ammunition because the bullet will not enlarge and fill the worn throat and bore "AND" boat tail bullets do not shoot well from a worn muzzle. (cord worn etc.)

In the early 90s we were issued winchester commercial ammo, then IVI for many years. On last years exercise we were issued Remington & then this year IVI again. We are issued soft points as we are encouraged to use our rifles for hunting. I dont think anyone in my patrol does this though, as anyone into hunting has nice rifles & wouldnt bother taking the club.

We used to get a small allotment at the CFB Borden Rod & Gun club. Shaking that stuff free from government stores is like trying to poke butter up a wildcat's butt with a hot poker. It' beautiful ammo though.

I was on an exercise in 29 palms california a while ago where we were promised 30000 5.56 and 25000 9mm rounds left over from a CSOR Ex. They had realised it would cost to much to ship it back to canada so we were to shoot it all. Sadly a few weeks before the range somewhere up the supply chaine decide to change there mind and ship 3/4 off the 5.56 back to canada and just left us the 9mm cause no one cares about 9mm. so i have an idea of what its like to poke ammo free from their butt's lol.

oops just encouraged necro threadings lol

Contrary to popular belief it is not a super-velocity cartridge and the official prohibition against its use in rifles and light automatic weapons stems only from the rapid barrel wear induced by the boattail projectile after the barrel has been used for Mark VII ammunition.

Also, let us remember that Enfield rifling was designed before the addoption of boat tail bullets. As such, it shoots better with flat based bullets as opposed to boat tail bullets.

Here is what the markings on the cans used to look like. Standard .50 cal ammo can.

Prvi is 174gr boat tail so closer to mk 8z suppose.
