What ammo works best in your Mosin?

60's Chinese has given the best results in my '29 hex with a decent bore. 3" groups with adjustable Euclidean front sight at 100 yards.

In my experience the Chinese 1960s surplus has been the most precise of the surplus ammo. Similarly gives 2"-5" groups at 100m depending on the rifle.

For commercial Hornady is one of the best.

Any folks here reload their own shells?

I do. I use 174 gr Sierra Match Kings under 47.3 gr Varget.

This is at 200 Yds.

I wouldn't mind trying surplus, but it's corrosive. I don't feel like cleaning my gun every time.

so you don't have time to spray the bore and push a rag through it? must be a very busy man

I have a few mosins, the one I enjoy shooting the most was an X sniper. got a repop mount and scope and put it on. it likes the silver tip Bulgarian the best.

Westrifle use to sell some decent non-corrosive ammo that shot really well in my rifle and for the life of me I can't remember what it was called. Anyone else buy it?

I really liked the yellow tip hungarian heavy ball that was around a few years ago. It was 174gn in copper washed cases. The cases were prone to splitting, but it shot well and generally shot to POI in rifles without bayonets affixed. With light ball, I often needed to affix bayonet to get the guns shooting to POA.

I ended up pulling a lot of the hungarian and re-loading it into PRIVI brass with better primers and it got match ammo-like in its accuracy.

I also really liked the Igman heavy ball when it was available - I think it was Serbian made. It's long gone now too though. The brass was reloadable boxer and I'm still reloading some of it!

I have 2 SKS'S that I cleaned regularly after shooting corrosive. I figured it was more work than spraying the bore and pushing a rag through.

well its a bolt action rifle. what else is there to clean besides the bore ? pull the bolt spray it with G96 or ? and push a rag through it. spray again leave it until you wana shoot it again. takes me 3 min to do. when I wana shoot it again push a dry patch through the bore and go shooting. I can understand it with a svt or sks, lots to take apart and clean. but a M91?

Its easy to load X54r. I just saved good brass from S&B and PRVI, its really good quality brass. Many Mosins have large bores ( not warn, just large) and shoot extremily well with a .312 bullet instead of the standard .310 cal. I've slugged the bores of everything X54r that I have and .312 shoots better in all of them.

Westrifle had LVE 203grain as well as MFS 203gr., both in fmj and soft points for hunting.

They ( soft points) shot very similar in my opinion, perhaps the LVE was just a bit better. Several places regularly carried the MFS ammo but the LVE was available mostly ( only?) from Westrifle that I had seen. Since I started loading 150gr soft points, I haven't really looked or noticed if MFS is still around. I still have a bunch of it on the shelf for back up.

I know our local canadian tire has MFS 7.62x54r.

MFS is popular on the east coast also.

I've only shot the MFS in 203gr soft points and it was reasonable ammunition both in cost and accuracy, but also non-reloadable steel cases.

I have not shot any other MFS products other than X54r, so take my opinion for what it is.
