Hi, I have never been hunting in my life, and a couple buddies of mine and I want to go hunting this spring. I just got a No1 MkIII and I want to put it to good use. What can we hunt with rifles during spring, except bears, I want to eat what i kill... I'm in Montreal.

Read your Provincial hunting regs but you'll likely find you're limited to bear(which are edible when properly prepared in the field. just like any other game) and varmints. You may nor be able to use a .303 for varmints though. That'll be in the hunting regs too. Of course, you'll have to have passed the Hunter's Safety Course. You can't just buy a rifle and go hunting.
Check the headspace on your rifle before you shoot it too. You have no idea if some twit changed the bolt head at some time.

Bears are great eating.... And probably one of the most exciting hunts for a noob hunter. It's simple enough to do-it-yourself, there is always the "fear factor" when an unexperienced hunter is bear hunting = excitment, and you also get to do a lot of watching/learning (you can have a couple bears under your stand at once).

Whether you're hunting bear or ground hogs, for the first few times, go with a seasoned hunter. LEARN. Ask questions before you hit the field. When in the field, tap a shoulder if you're walking quiet, rather than blurting out your question... Yeah, the last bit is a pet peeve. The number of times I've taken a noob, who DIDN'T take that bit to heart, cost me a fair number of shots.

The worst was a noob who came with a .22 while I was deer hunting, with the intent of shooting only at grouse.
I was stalking a couple deer that were clashing horns, approaching VERY stealthy. Bang. .22 shot. I wait, dead silent, thinking 'well at least we'll have chicken tonight'. The deer continue battering each other & I continue up the hill, they're on the other side. I'm really quiet, BANG... damn... I wait, the deer start banging again. I'm within 5' of the crest, I can SMELL the deer.... BANGBANGBANGBANGBANG... The SOB had decided to TARGET SHOOT... I watched as 2 rather large bucks ran off into the woods. I even found all their prints where they'd been fighting...

I NEVER took that SOB hunting EVER again!

The worst part of the whole thing? HE MISSED THE GROUSE!

LEARN from the guys & gals on here. If nothing else, stuff like above, will clue you in as to what NEVER to do!

My wife and I killed bears & the meat was EXCELLENT!!! Don't let others tell you what the meat will be like, bear meat is GOOD!!!

Cheers

Spend some quality time on a range with your rifle. Make sure your good to go, otherwise you could be eaten by what you tried to kill.

Yeah I plan on going to the range quite a few times before going hunting. Do people on CGN bring "noobs" hunting, i'm far from a noob when it comes to shooting but ive got everything to learn about hunting.

Yes, folks take noobs out all the time... BUT most folks I know, tend to stick with folks they KNOW. people they've been to the range with, so they have an idea what the person is all about.

Knowing how to shoot isn't the same as knowing how to hunt ;)

BUT if the "old timers" don't take out newbies, how do we then get good hunters out & about to help control the various species numbers?

Thanks for all the advice guys...i will be spending alot of time at the range getting familiar with my rifle, then i have to find someone to take me out... don't worry i'm not clumbsy and have done enough trainning recce patrols to know how to be quiet.... now...any volunteers??
