Okay so first things first I live in Newfoundland and I've lived here my whole life, I thought I know all the animals that live here. If you don't know Newfoundland, well, it's an island, we don't have a lot of your common critters example: no deer, possums or raccoons. But for the past 10 ish years we have had a huge problem with newly introduced coyotes. Coyotes here grow to be 40-50 pounds and to make it worse, Labrador wolves come down on the ice and now we have coywolf hybrids that get to 80-100 pounds quite commonly. In fact there was one dead on the highway going through a city here 2 days ago that weighed at least 60 pounds, anyways about the creature my brother seen tonight. We were heading to a secluded spot, going to walk to 4 ponds we don't know of anyone ever fishing, after already seeing coyotes and having moose circle us we now carry a gun everywhere. Today's gun was a maverick 88 pump 12, we just left our truck and started to walk and my brother slightly ahead of me jumped back and said "look at that huge fox, holy ####!" And I love foxes so I never thought twice because I knew it ran anways, then he told me I should probably take the gun out of its case, and started to load it he said "there it is again watching us from the trees" but by the time I got it loaded the thing was gone again. I asked why he wanted the gun loaded for a fox and he said it's absolutely huge so I got him to describe it, thinking it was only your average 2 foot long fox (excluding tail) and here's the description he gave me.

Colour: black and orange like a patch fox (if anything more black than orange)
Height: 2.5 feet off the ground
Length: at least 5'6 long
Fur: thick/fluffy
Body: very fat
Face: exactly like a big fox

Further information, we walked very close before it made a move, after we got back to the truck 4 hours after with no sign of the animal we decided to check the area for clues, the grass was flattened in a big area (maybe 15 feet around) and there were 2 types of poop there, one belonging to a moose and the other is poop I don't recognize, it was in a pile like bear poop would be, but it was long skinny pieces about the size of moose poop, just in strips. Also less than 10 feet away from the flattened grass there is 2 holes dug in the ground presumably by that animal. We are both avid outdoorsmen and we have seen our fair share of coyotes and even wolves, he swears this thing was just like a huge fox though, he can't stop stressing how much the head looked like a foxes head. I showed him pics of wolves, coywolves, big black wolves and the only thing that I found that he said has the same body is a red wolf, I've never heard of this species before and it's suppose to be endangered but I'm telling you for visual reference. I'm looking to see what animal has a red wolf's body and a silver fox's head?

Further note, maybe it was a huge patch fox but do you guys really think a fox can get up to 60+ pounds?

Making some assumptions here ...

Coyotes here have been caught with a reddish/blondish fur.
Wolverine would have very distinct ears compared to fox/coyote/wolf and is not known to appear on the island portion of NL
Patch Fox (read: cross fox) is still not known to be of that size, as he stayed around for a while, that is typical of some fox encounters I have had.
Coyotes are known to breed with dogs (Pick a breed) if necessary, and probably eat the dog after breeding.

This could very well be a coyote/dog offspring.

Pics would be great, trailcam would be the way to capture them.
