I’m looking for a Colt 1873 peacemaker 44-40 with 4 ¾” barrel. Any feedback on finding one in Canada would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

You odds are directly related to how much you have to spend.

And whether you want original Colt, new Colt, or US or Italian made replica.

If you want something for a collection, budget around $4K-5K range for a reasonably good one. Half that or less for modern. Double or more for a real centerpiece for a collection.

It will be a Restricted Firearm anyway, named caliber as "Not Precribed Antique" Read the stickies and the flowchart on Prescribed Antiques.

Take a look at the auction sites, the Rock Island site usually has some really good pieces. Import costs are gonna be cheap compared to the purchase.

If you just want a Cowboy gun to take to the range, buy a new one and pay under a $K

I've never seen one in the flesh, I would buy a replica and just go shoot it..

Do you mean like the second from the left?

Yes, that's what I'm looking for. I just bought a Winchester 1873 44-40, and would like an gen 1 colt to go with it.

Ohhh that is a beautiful rifle- there is a for sale in the black powder EE a gun from gutinater--
Antique Colt SAA's ENGRAVED 38 SPC ANTIQUE BEAUTY
but it is not original he has modified it to shoot "38 special Colt SAA"
Not my sort of thing (I like original unmodified myself) but if you are only concerned about looks it may do...
Smellies is all original. If you private message him he will gladly give you all sorts of info- he likes to be helpful.

Thanks janice, but wouldn't be happy with anything but a 44-40. I may have to contact Smellies for some info.

Thanks Guys.

Nope. Too rich for my blood! Read their auction estimates and reports of sales prices. Read the fine print, to see what the buyers burn is on top of the bid price, too. So you know, if you do decide to bid. They clear a LOT of NICE guns through there.

There are a couple guys around that will do the shipping and import paperwork for you, for a couple hundred bucks. THAT is probably the cheapest part of the process.

To your advantage, a 44-40 is a restricted firearm and worth slightly less in the Canadian market than an Antique caliber. To the detriment, the price gap between an Antique one and a Restricted one, is large enough that it is profitable to convert any gun that is in poor enough shape that it does not justify leaving it alone. And some that should maybe have been left alone, but that's capitalism!
The other thing to keep in mind is that there are still a fair few that were made after the 1898 cut-off date that will suit your needs nicely, but do not interest the Antique guys unless as potential parts donors.

Really, you are looking at slim pickings in Original guns, with fewer around and more guys looking all the time. If you are really serious about a decent shooter-safe one, I would suggest a good start point as far as a bankroll to be carrying in cash, would be around $4K.

How nice can you afford? (rhetorical question) Educate yourself about what you are loking for and at, so you will recognize a deal when you see it. It may not be there by the time you figure out what it is, eh!

Cheers

The 44-40 , will not be considered antique in Canada due to caliber-- they are restricted firearms- not prohibited (barrel is long enough) but caliber is what makes this restricted. Smellies was made before the cut off date but is restricted due to the bullet it is built to use. You cannot legaly own a non-registered 44-40.
