Alright so im in the market for a levergun. Budget to 1500$. I am having quite the trouble finding what i want. It must be 45/70. It must be octagon barrel 24 or 26" long and no stock checkering. Marlin cowboy was my original plan but is out because of so many horror stories and negative reviews on quality control post remington. I would have loved the Winchester 1886 but for some reason there selling them with a round barrel. Anyone have any other suggestions? maybe a Uberti but they dont have a 45/70 option only hard to get ammo 45/60 and 45-75. What about those Cimarron 1886s?

I would find a used Marlin Cowboy in 45/70 made by Marlin(JM), they are out there and worth it, one of my favorite rifles in 45/70. Action is very strong, so is the recoil....'86s are nice but don't know about the spaghetti ones....IMHO
If you find one you will be well under budget, use the extra dough to buy a SKINNER peep sight, and some reloading equipment, so you can rock your socks off.

oh really??? i can shoot 45/70 in a 45/75 I'll go for the Uberti Centennial then. I assume any gun dealer can order from them?

I would doubt that; the 45/75 has more of a bottle neck case were as the 45/70 has more of a straight wall case. Now you can make 45/60 cases from a cut down 45/70.

There is a Winchester model 1876 made in Japan in 45/70 but with no octagonal barrel that is new production.

Totally dif. cartridge head dia., the 45/75 is shorter and has a shoulder, prolly best to make cases from .348 Win......the only ones that will interchange with the 45/70 is the Sharps series of .45s....the 45/90, 45/100, 45/110, 45/120.....Ben

Nope dont think so, biggest is 30-30. I wonder if a good gunsmith could fit a octagon barrel to a new winchester 1886 if i bought one? order a original octagon from an erlier 1886 from winchester.

By far the best known of the buffalo cartridges used on the western frontier was the illustrious .45-70 Government. Still popular today, the .45-70 was introduced in 1873 and was the U.S. Army's standard service cartridge from that time until it was officially replaced by the .30-40 Krag in 1892.

In 1875 a civilian version of the .45-70 Government was produced by the Sharps Company as the .45-75 Sharps (Straight), and sometimes called the .45-70 Sharps. The Sharps Company liked the name on their rifles to match the name on the cartridge it used, a common marketing strategy at the time. These cartridges were actually dimensionally identical to the .45-70 Govt., and factory loads used a 400 grain bullet at a MV of 1330 fps and ME of 1580 ft. lbs.

I would say they are the same cartridge but then again if you may be talking about something different ????

Bookworm: You are reading too many books....If you use a lighter then std. bullet in the 45/70, then it may hold more powder eg: 75grs., Sharps did that and wanted to call it different......But make no mistake the 45/75 is a Win. development and a shorter, shouldered case, that is in no way interchangeable with the 45/70. The cartridge was made shorter then the Gov. round to fit the action of the model of 1876. This gun and cartridge went on to be come the "centennial" cart. and the cartridge/rifle combo issued to our NWMP.
Note also that Brunette prolly doesn't want a strictly black powder firearm or copy of such, as the Marlin is a totally diff. story.

You are then talking about an entirely different cartridge
There are two 45-75's one is the 45-75 Sharps and it is interchangeable with the 45-70 and the other is the 45-75 WCF which is the one that was used by the NWMP and it is NOT interchangeable with the 45-70

The uberti centennial is already 1700 dollars and with custom work to make 45/70 would be well over 2000$. Almost looks like I'm #### outta luck for a new production 45/70 octagon barrel. I know chiappa ans rossi make them but i heard there cheap and have quality control issues like the marlin.

Yup, most single shots come with octagon barrels, with a Shiloh Sharps, or C. Sharps, or CPA, you can specify full or half octagon, tapered or straight, diameter(weight).

I would like a lever, not single shot though. uberti does not sell a SINGLE shot lever lol

Then you should tell them not to advertise such. http://www.shooterschoice.com/uberti/Uberti.htm
885 HIGH WALL RIFLE .45-70 30" $1,195.00

I've been hunting and shooting over 40 years and you think your going to laugh at the answer? Perhaps my years of selling advertising for a hunting and shooting magazine with my knowledge of first hand hunting and shooting might just bring your smile to your knees.

Your welcome!
