what are pump and lever guns for?

A friend of mine shoots a 7600 because deer season starts at the end of duck season here and it makes for an easier transition for him.

The great thing about them is they are sleek, without a bolt protruding from the side, especially in the bush. Lever guns go great in a scabbard on a saddle or from a ring and you don't have to concern yourself with a bolt catching on stuff.

Because they are a thing of beauty, that will take any game I will encounter. They are easy to carry, balance in my hand like it is an extension of myself. I am 100% confident in my shooting abilities when they are in my hands. Plus, they look way cooler!

Personally I think bolts are boring and every Tom, #### and Harry has one. IMO in addition to my beloved levers, I'd rather have a single shot, semi or pump over a bolt.

All this being said I actually own more levers than bolts. Each has its place and I wouldn't trade any of them. I personally dislike pump rifles but I will say that my Bf has an old pump Rem model 12 22LR with a ring in the rifleing and hands down it is the most accurate iron site gun I've yet seen.

They are about as ambidextrous as it gets. Many left-handed shooters used lever and pump guns back in the days before left-handed bolt actions were readily available.

"Yeah, and I know they make them, but 30-30 just wouldn't feel right out of a bolt action. "

30/30 bolt would not feel right??????

Try a savage 340. Mine is a perfect gun out to 150 yards. Comfortable and deadly accurate.

Yes I took offense on behalf of my rifle.

Ejection ports on pumps and some levers are on the right side. Can be distracting to southpaws.:)

Lever guns are for doing this:

Those of us that are supposedly "wrong handed" tend to like them as sometimes the cal you want is not available in a leftie bolt. Close quarter hunting in brush a long barrelled bolt with a scope is a liability. They have a place-that would explain why they are still around after all these years. Then again I have a Miroku lever 45/70 and a Savage 99c lever in 308 too. Both really handy rifles.

Not sure about pumps but levers are easier to carry than bolts. When I work in the bush (exploration staking etc) I carry a lever because it interferes with my job less than a bolt. If you carry a rifle in your hands for extended periods, a lever is more natural (for me) Like last week where 3 days of my 5 day sheep hunt rained, and my rifle does not carry well on my pack with the pack cover in place so the rifle (micro medallion scoped) was in my hands and felt rather awkward after awhile.... I also end up with a bruise on my back from the bolt after an hour or more with a bolt rifle slung. Not issues in a lot of situations but I spend weeks out of the year carrying a rifle.

ok settle down, try to keep the trolling to a minimum. :runaway:

I have mostly bolt guns, but those lever guns are handy for short range work and pack easy. I throw a win94 30-30 behind the truck seat just because you never know when you will need a rifle. :D Pump guns, well I've never owned a pump rifle, but it seems just natural to have pump shotguns.
