Wondering what smaller frame completely ambidextrous pistols are available to us, Preferbly 9mm, Other than the Walther PPQ series which is already in consideration. The girlfriend likes coming ou twith me every so often and enjoys shooting, Bit shes a lefty and has small hands. What are some recommendations you guys have? I would want it to be 100% ambidextrous, Not just a mag release or a safety.

And Go

+1 on the Bersa Thunder Pro.... I have one in .40 and I have smaller hands and it fits like a glove! Awesome trigger and fully ambi right out of the box for both the de-cocker and the slide- lock. Mag release requires only one screw to be moved over to the other side!

P30 and VP9 are both ambi. If your girlfriend is by any chance right eye dominant, it might be worthwhile to just learn how to shoot right-handed.

I'm left eye dominant and left hand dominant with medium sized hands. I've never really found it a bother to operate any handgun regardless of whether it's features were ambi or not. And I do use either hand and either eye for aiming.

Sorry this doesn't help you directly. My most comfortable handgun is probably my M&P9, but closest to full ambi is my xDM - that being said the one thing I wanted to be ambi was the slider release and the xDM doesn't have that!!

I guess what I'm saying is that a full ambi handgun might not make that much of a difference in her interest in the sport.

Looks like it might be the ppq, A friend of mine has the m1 he seems to love it, I do like the paddle style mag release, but not the extended barrel, m2 might be more to her liking

As a lefty, pistol type will play a factor depending what you/she wants. Often, learning from the start to use a certain pistol that is missing some of the controls on the right side is not a factor for a lefty, but can be for a right handed person trying to teach a lefty to do it left handed! As Shawn mentioned, if it has a thumb safety then that is about the only thing that needs to be on the right side of the pistol. A slide catch is second place, but most lefties can easily learn to lock a slide open using their left pointing finger. As far as mag releases go, I used to flip them over to the right side for thumb activation, but with smaller hands it is actually easier to have the release on the finger side for easier use. Again, something a right handed person with larger hands would not understand.

Now for gun choices you should think about what feels good and what performance level you want as you could end up going through a number of pistols before you are satisfied. If you really want to keep it simple a striker fire pistol is a very good choice. The PPQ has a lot of good reviews. I have an M&P Pro Core and enjoy using it. With an Apex trigger it is one of the best shooters I have. I had a Girsan (B92 clone) that was good, but I quickly outgrew the decocker style of pistol. The CZ Shadow I owned was another good choice and was very left handed friendly. It fits most hands, but may feel heavy until the shooter realizes how smooth it shoots. Most 1911s in a single stack would be OK, but depending on the grip they could be too large. I know my double stack 2011s are all large grips, even the small ones.

My best advice is to get softer loaded 9mm ammo to start with, depending on what your/her intentions are.

I'm a lefty also, went thru this process a while ago when I bought my first handgun, unfortunately I never got to hold a PPQ, so I can't comment on it, but if you can find a FNS9 LS for her to hold it might be a good option, about as ambi as a handgun gets, and the long slide seems to keep the recoil down quite a bit, makes it easy to shoot well. I'm not a big guy, and would say I have a smaller hand, with the flat backstrap it fits my hand well. My wife enjoyed shooting mine so much that she got her own :)
Good luck finding the one that works for your wife, I love shooting with my wife, good to have a shared hobby, lol

As long as it does not have a thumb activated safety on only the lefty side of the gun they all are

Shawn

+1. The mag release can easily be operated with the trigger finger instead of the thumb, slingshot the slide for slide lock reloads and the slide lock can be figured out however as it is not used under any sort of time pressure.

and you NEVER notice the brass being ejected- ever- and I've been in this game 40 years, on all- 22, 9, 45, you name it- the only issue is the safety and the mag release being in the so-called "wrong SPOT- and if ty're trained properly with your finger OFF THE TRIGGER until you're on target, you seldom use the safety anywya

Surprised nobody mentioned Walther P99 yet. It will fit small hands well, completely ambidextrous and has an excellent trigger to boot. One if my favourite pistols.
