the Springfield M6 Scout is nifty...but the .22LR w/.410ga is just not quite strong enough for what I'm interested in. is there anything out there chambered for something like .223/20ga?

Savage no longer lists their model 24 on their website, but you might still find some new ones in gunshops, and many were sold over the years so there are used ones about. I can't recall if they made any .223/20ga. Mine's a 24F in .223/12ga. and I like it.

blargon, many thanks! I noticed a number of Savage 24V Series D listed. .222/20ga is pretty darn close to what I was thinking too. excellence! :D

what other combo guns were made?

Many, many choices if you have deep pockets and are willing to import a European model. Merkel, Heym, Zoli, Rizzini, Blaser, etc. etc.... But you're looking at over $3000 for most.

Remington makes one. It is the SPR 94 and is available in 410/22 LR
410/22 WMR, 12/223 Rem, 12/308 Win, 12/30-06 Sprg

Stay away from the crude Russian stuff and no offence but damned few of the centerfire shotgun Sav 24's have barrels that are even remotely regulated to hit at the same POI.It's not an uncommon complaint with 24's.I had a 30-30/20ga that didn't hit within a yard of one another at 25 yards! Useless unless you wanted a 8lb SS rifle! I have a old .410/.22 24 you can break claybirds with perfectly regulated.Back when QC mattered.JMO...Harold *no such thing as a cheap combo gun$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I had one a few years back in 20ga/.223. It would not fire the .223 bbl so I took it to the local blacksmith for fixing, which he did. While there he mentioned that he gets alot of those combos for fixing and would avoid at all cost. I do.

a lot of people love theirs but im not exactly a big fan of the 24-F anymore.
in concept the gun is great, but in practice.. meh.

i had a .223/12ga. which youd think is a really neat bush gun combo. the extractor setup on mine was really flimsy - i think some of the parts they use werent hardened properly and when you get sticky cases it would just stick - the gun would actually open but the extractor stopped moving :runaway:
you had to pry under it with a screwdriver/knife to help it push the case out.

it wasnt just my gun, because i closely examined several of them at gunshows and the telltale little marks from people prying under the extractor were on many of them.

if i recall correctly (was a long time ago) i fixed mine by replacing the pin that pushes the extractor assembly with one made from a cobalt drill bit so it didnt 'give' like the soft factory part, and that vastly improved extraction. i traded the gun long ago.

theyre not exactly cheap either, youre looking at $400 for a used one in great shape. theyre also heavy as a pig, especially once you scope them. all i can say is make sure you handle one, imagine it with a scope mounted and loaded, perhaps with a shell carrier as well. examine the extractor area and ensure that it functions properly (its easy to see).

something to consider -- i just ordered a Rossi Trifecta for $300, in the youth size.
should make an interesting cheap trunk/cottage gun and maybe grouse gun.

20ga, .243 and .22LR interchangeable barrels on a single-shot receiver, theres a removable cheek piece as well. they also have .44 mag instead of .243.

its only $300 brand new so its not like ill cry if its not so great. i really wanted a SMALL lightweight, reliable and accurizable .22 because all the ones i have are much too bulky. i might try to weld up a folding stock for it.

"...if they made any .223/20ga..." Yep. Had one briefly. Didn't shoot worth beans. You'll be looking for a used one now though.

Yes the Spanish Rossi SS are not real great in the accuracy or extraction Dept. You have to play with the fore end screw to apply barrel tention ETC...................Not for me..............Harold

I've got an old Savage in 30-30/20 gauge, pretty handy combo. Gotta put different sights on it though...

Troutseeker

Ive got that combo, synthetic stock I bought new in 89.
A slug shoots about 4" lower than the 30-30 at 50yds.
Windage is the same.I must have got lucky,I really like mine.
