what are some really good single shot rifles?

The older mauser guns ES350 B,Mauser DSM etc
Also last two at the bottom C Sharps 1885 winchester, mine has a single set trigger and my Varner Stevens

There are a lot of BSA martini rifles that fit that bill

what are some good modern day single shot rimfire rifles right now?

action is unimportant, but I'd prefer a heavy barrel for 50 yard plinking.

Depends on your budget....
For <$500 a "modern day" I've always wanted was a Savage MK1 FV but ended up finding a beautiful re-worked S&L from a fellow G'Nutter. I've had no reason to continue the search.....thanks Ben

I don't know of any new ones, but I've got a couple Shultz and Larsen single shots from Tradex, and they're great rifles with pretty decent target sights. Keep an eye on the Tradex website, they've usually got a selection of interesting single shot 22's, and their descriptions are fairly good.

If you don't mind spending a large amount of cash, the CPA Stevens ( reproduction of Stevens 44-1/2 single shots) rifles are absolutely top notch target rifles. Not what I'd buy for plinking at 50 yards though. Custom built and very spendy with lots of options available.

Chasseur, how does your C. Sharps 1885 shoot? I have rifles built by them, but centrefire. I do use a Crossno .22 liner insert with one of them. With RWS 50 it is really accurate at 100m, although not quite as good as the CPA.

What's your budget, and what do you think amounts to acceptable 'plinking' accuracy?

And do you want new, or are you willing to buy used? How modern is "Modern"?

Because you can run out right now and spend the price of a nice car, on a new single shot rifle from Anschutz, or you might be best served with a used Cooey, for beer money.

As asked, you are pretty much asking "How long is string?". There are a LOT of answers, many of which are wrong for you, because you have not really provide enough information.

The CSharps is very accurate shoots much better than I can.

If I could have only one .22LR., this would be it.

I have a Suhl 150 [Hard to find, btw] It is without a doubt the most accurate 22 rimfire I have ever owned.
Shoots in the .1's and .2's at 50 meters with a certain lot # of ELEY Match EPS.
My 40X Remington is very close, with my M37 Remington in this ballpark as well.
Target from the 40X - 5 shots at each bull.
