I am new to this fourm and have a m305 on the way was just wondering what i could do to it that would be cheap and something i could do my self to improve the rifle. I am sure people have talked about this before but i am just busy right now and dont have the time to look through the threads. thanks for the help

Do yourself a HUGE favour and take a Hungry clinic. Best $35 I ever spent.

You'll learn to properly take it apart, assess all the critical crap and correct it.

I went to the Jan Barrie clinic and I think it's safe to say everyone there had a blast and learned a lot.

+1 on the clinic. Its hard to understand some things when you read them. Its a lot easier when you are shown. Lots of cheep tuning tips, and advice regarding things to get, and not get. I feel it is say to say that, if you do not take the clinic, your #### might fall off...lol

+2 on the clinic.

I, and the above 2 posters sat close to each other at the Barrie clinic and gained lots of hands-on knowledge about the M14S.

why titanium piston? Nothing wrong with chinese piston if the gun shoots
Why sadlak? Buy Canadian! (Marstar)
why buffer? Useless

To add to chemo statement is that if you buy an aftermarket piston meant for American gas systems then put it into generally over sized Chinese gas system. This can chamfering inside the piston chamber and cause even more headache's in the future. Also the recoil buffer can cause issues to with your rifle. Further more there is no need to buy a Sadlak spring guide then buy an US op-rod spring if there are many Canadian op-rod spring guides available that do the same thing.
Hell a friend of mine swaped out his chu wood stock for a USGI fiber glass stock and beded it. Then got an op-rod spring guide plus a Smith mount with a nice scope. Then got a trigger job and once he worked up a load all 5 shots were a little over 3/4 of an inch.
jcpal hit up a clinc or watch it on line and then make up your mind weather or not to go down that road but what ever you do don't give your rifle with a whole bunch of ammo to Hungry & ask him to break it in.
;)

find some ammo and shoot her hehehe
i also do not recommend recoil buffers, they actually interfere with the correct function of the rifle by stopping the bolt at least an 1/8th inch from where it is supposed to be at the rear of the stroke.

american made pistons in a chinese cylinder "might" work in some chinese assemblies for a time but as satain mentions...... these thinner diameter pistons are undersize for the chinese cylinders and use of them can cause piston chatter..... wobbling in the cylinder under fire, that will inevitably render your cylinder and piston useless. I've witnessed this effect in my own studies and in clients short stroking rifles.

tonnes of info here , if a hungry clinic comes to your area it is a MUST attend event.
my basic recommendations to folks that want a no frills upgrade.
clean your rifle exceptionally well the first time you get it.
use grease not oil to lube her up
an NM oprod spring guide rod is a solid investment, marstar or rauch tactical for the "made for chinese springs" version
and check the part on your barrel that is half way between receiver and gas system. if this part (oprod guide) has a tiny bit of movement it's okay.... if it's wobbly side to side more than an 1/8 inch rotation either way.... you might want to address that for accuracy purposes.
shoot a few boxes of ammo to break in your trigger
and then decide if you want to upgrade further.
my advice for what it's worth

unfortunately, ALL attempts over the past several months , by several people i have talked to, to get a hold of Rob/taratan tactical....... have been fruitless. An associate even spoke with his parents..... but no return reply from rob.
For all appearances and for lack of an explanation...... Tartan Tactical seems to have dropped off the radar. I was supplying his guide rods for my builds but am now sourceing from Rauch and Marstar. My early rauch guide rods were not as smooth as the last few batches that have come..... they are excellent and will perform well in the chinese rifle.
Given the option of the 3 that were availlable..... I'd be hard pressed to recommend any one over the other.

I didn't read the replys but....the Hungry clinic is a good idea...I wish I was closer to him so I could sit in on ne...read the stickies posted about m14/m305 stuff also...you can do lots yourself.

....also what you must do is take the thing out, shoot it, shoot it lots see how it shoots to get an idea of what you want to do to it.

I have two now...one I am keeping stock in its wood and the other I am makeing a poor mans SOCOM out of. They are one of my favorite guns to shoot.

one coming up in london soon. A guy from Chalk River Ontario made the 4 hour trip in a snow storm to attent the one last weekend. Ajax to london isnt that bad of a drive ;)

i live in ajax ontario so is there going to be a clinic close to that

I don't want to hijack the intention of this post, but I will say that the clinics are going to be scarce once my ORA Service Rifle and Service CQB season get rolling the end of March.

So get on board while you can!

Now back to upgrades for cheap! :D
