I was looking to purchase a set of BUIS (Back Up Iron sights) and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them... Who's the best maker? Yankee Hill? GG&G? Others?

Thanks!

I have an ARMS 40 on my AR but i do not have any experience with other ones, thus can not give comparison...

All I can say is that i like my ARMS BUIS.

Cheers,

Alex

Sig arms Diopter drum is the best sights imo, HK makes a removeable set of diopter sights for AR`s I`m having a set brought in for me.
I hope they are as nice as the Sig ones.
All the others are basically the same to me.

Don't lose "sight" of what it is you are buying guys, it's a BackUpSight, no a Camp Perry NM reachout and touch someone sight. My opinion only but an A2 or any complicated system has no business on a BIS especially on a civvy social/competition rifle. As always YMMV.

I don't have an optic on my flattop right now so my ARMS 40 is the only game in town. Not able to offer comparisons, but it is nicely zeroed and works great.

How much Koolaid you wana drink? The US Army uses the Matech and the KAC. The US spec requires a spring-loaded sight that will fold down if impacted so it won't break.

Many popular BUIS lock up and therefore don't meet the ARMY spec. Doesn;t mean they are no good.

The TROY BUIS gets great reviews as does the ARMS 40L.

The KAC is probably the most pricey. Wilson Combat makes a cool elevation adjustable sight but it's KAC expensive.

I use a Matech myself, but honestly my optic has never failed so I generally don't use my BUIS. You should have something though.

Claven - actually you are incorrect.

The "Airborne" Corps specificed a sprung loaded BIS - hence a lot of units have bought the ARMS #40 -- to wit the BIS on the Mk12 Mod0 is the #40 (which goes mostly to Army SOF)

The SOPMOD BIS is the KAC 300m BIS

The BIS on the USMC SAM is the KAC 600mBIS, it is also on the Mk11 Mod0 sniper rifles and the Mk12 Mod1's

Recently USASOC has been buying Troy front and rear BIS.

NAVSOF has been issuing the LMT "cut" carry handle rear for a while.

the Matech was the Big Army attempt via Picatinny Arsenal to build an at home solution to the BIS -- very few units issue these (they SUCK)

Well Kevin, being that I have no "time in" in which I might have to trust a BUIS, and you do I'll take your word for it. As I said, I've never had to rely on a BUIS.

WRT the Matech being made at Picatinny Arsenal, everything I've read says NO. It was made by a small company on contract for picatinny according to several US sources I've talked to.

Does it suck? Well, it doesn't suck on my rifle. It holds zero and stays neatly folded away and co-witnesses just fine with an Aimpoint on the rare occasion I;ve flipped it up. Biggest complaint I've heard from the sandbox operators is that the nub that holds the aperture arm down tends to wear out with use - causing the aperture to stay in the up position all the time. Frankly, I'll never wear out the nub on mine with the VERY infrequent use I subject it to :) Also, if you like having dual apertures to flip to, the matech does not offer this - only the small aperture. Oh well. I never use the battle sight anyhow.

Also, alot of soldiers over on arfcom seem to be issued the matech so I have no idea what the real numbers are, but some units are still issued them.

If I was going to buy another BUIS (doubtful) I would go with (in this order):
-KAC 300m
-Troy
-ARMS40L
-LMT fixed.
-Matech

But that's just me! :)

I guess my suck comments where too strong

It was a Natick/Picatinny design outsourced to be built (the at home build comment) - cost is MUCH lower than the KAC etc stuff. They did the same thing with a rail mount for the M249 SAW instead of buying the superior KAC M249 RAS.

While I dont need two aperatures for a BIS -- I want it first and foremost to have a LARGE apperature. IF push comes to shove and you have to use you BIS -- I personally want it to be quick -- not precise and slow.
