what are the major pros and cons of a hammer fired handgun , and a striker fired handgun? foer example, Is one type less reliable? Is one type harder to clean etc etc. Im asking because a few of the handguns im interested in buying are different types, 1 is striker fired and 1 is hammer fired.

Typically a hammer fired handgun will have cleaner single action trigger break. Striker fired trigger break is *usually* mushy, what I call a light switch like trigger.

Also striker fired guns usually does not have an external safety, the safety would usually be built in to the trigger. A single action only (1911) would usually incorporate an external safety. A hammer fired /single double action would either have an external safety (cz shadow) or a decocker (a normal p226).

Reliability and drop safe depends a lot on the specific gun design and craftsmanship.

Both types are reliable. Hammer can get you a single or double action pistol if that's what you want. Cleaning isn't really relevant for the choice in my opinion. I wouldn't say one is much better then the other. It comes down to personal preference really. Do you like vanilla or chocolate? I have a sweet tooth. I like both.

OP what pistols were you thinking of?

Thnaks for responses. Was looking into either Glock 17, sig P226, Walter PPQ M2, HK p30L, Berretta 92fs inox.

Every single one of those guns are awesome...I’m a Sig fanboy but I love my Glocks and HK’s too...And The trigger on the PPQ sets a new standard for striker fired guns. You can’t go wrong whichever one you choose - and you can get the others too...

Always said I’d never own a Tupperware pistol, bought a CZ Shadow then I tried a G34
So easy to clean -equals reliability
So easy to mod - parts are cheap & easy to get
Glock mags fit my Sub 2000 & are amazing quality
The 34 frame is based off a 1911 ergonomics- best of both worlds

They are all excellent choices. From a reliability standpoint, you should gets 1000's of rounds down the barrel before a maintenance issue of any type should ever pop up on any of those pistols.

I own a Beretta 92 myself. Also a Norinco clone of the Sig226. The grips on these two pistols tend to be a little wider. Be sure to get out and play with them so you can see if they are optimal for your hand size.

They are all exellent guns. Go to a store and try holding them in your hand, pick the one you feel most comfortable with.

Personally I have a hard time operating the safety on 92fs, but that's something you'll find out as part of hands on experience.

Not sure why you have excluded CZ from your list; IMO, better trigger, grip and balance; comparable price. I personally have found that Berretta and Sig have long take-ups on their triggers and the Sig has a huge grip I love the decocker on the Sig; People who have Glocks like them but I have no experience with them or the Walther or HK. I like an all steel gun. I have an IWI Baby Eagle .40, and love it, but like the Sig decocker better.

Try as many as you can; go to a few gun stores and handle all of them; Buy one that fits well, regardless of what the rest of us say, and enjoy it. My most favorite center fire pistols are both "cheap" guns; Norincos. Accurate, reliable, and above average triggers.

As previously said, those are all great guns and none are "bad". Of that list the Sig p226 and Beretta 92 would be my preference over the Glock 17 just based on the trigger and feel. I can't shoot glocks nearly as well as hammer pistols and I have shot some expensive upgraded ones. I have not shot an HK p30L so I can't comment on it. CZ 75 would be another contender. My current fav 9mm in my safe is a Beretta 92A1.

No it's not. The 34 is exactly the same frame as G17 or a G22. Glock pistols do not share any geometry with a 1911.

P30L will make you hate the inside of the trigger guard. The cutout rubs on your trigger finger, and when i had one, it barely ejected casings. Out of the box it stovepiped every 10 shots, and after it was broken in, at best the casings landed on your shooting hand and dribbled off. Oh and that trigger reset.. it feels like a mile and a half. Love hk, but be aware of that model

To answer your question, striker fire give you the exact same trigger pull with every shot. Double/single action hammer fired pistols give you a heavy pull on the first shot, then light for every shot after. Requires a bit more practice to master.
