What are the rules for a 10 year old and clay games?

As he is too young for even a minor's PAL he can borrow a gun and but he must be under the "direct and immediate supervision" of a PAL holder.

This would not seem to specifically preclude him having his own gun but you should not be shooting at the same time. If you are shooting and he is in possession of a firearm then he is no longer under your direct and immediate supervision. When he shoots you sit the round out and be beside him with your gun in the rack. When you shoot make sure his gun is racked and he doesn't touch it.

Also check with the club to make sure they are okay with it.
 
I have seen where the parent or appointed guardian stands directly behind the young shooter to ensure where and what the muzzle is pointed at: complete focus on the shooter, no other shooters at that line and certainly no shooting by the supervising person.

Direct and immediate supervision could also be another member of the club, so that you could shoot on the same squad. No different than new members who have to prove themselves to be safe shooters.
 
Thanks guys. I was thinking we'd both shoot but my gun would be on rack when he shoots (so I could be 100%focused on him) then his gun would be put on rack by me when he is done. Provided the host club was ok with it all.
 
It does not depend on club rules.
By federal regulation he must be under direct arms length control. He is an unlicensed person in control of a firearm, and thus needing direct supervision by a licensed person.
CFO, in doing range inspections in Saskatchewan, has been emphasizing the need for direct control of unlicensed persons.

Where are you getting this "arms length" stipulation?
 
If he is shooting sporting clays, there are junior and sub junior categories for prizing as well as reduced entry fees, as long as it is a CNSCA registered event. All other rules apply for the competitive side, although many would be lenient with the "no coaching" rules.
some clubs may be more restrictive, but if the youth is respectful and well behaved, i think it is a great opportunity to introduce a youngster to the clay sports.
 
Check your club rules and check your confidence in your son. If both check out then you are good! At my club a non-PAL guest can't handle guns except when under direct supervision while on position. I carry a double gun carry case with me for sporting and skeet- one in, one out. It is a bit chunky but we go "off-times" when the club isn't busy. It is very important he has a gun that fits and is shooting ammo that doesn't beat him up or he will lose interest very quickly. What feels light in a 9lb target gun kicks much harder in a 6lb youth model. A light 20ga with 3/4 loads would be recommended if you don't already have something for him. If he has a 12ga I would highly recommend the Winchester AA featherlights- you can get them from Hummason's among other places.
 
If and when I figure out how to post up videos from my phone, I will post my guy shooting the 870 with steel shot off the table during our hunting trip. He is a strong kid but didn't like the buckshot particularly. Still - nailed the cans at 25 odd meters off stumps. Yes, I was beside him although the video shows him loading / muzzle control and checking the safety.

I have a old honda xr50 that i let my nephews or kids drive but only of they are mature enough to handle it and are able to take directions. Some are and others are not.

Does the kid listen. Is he more mature for his age? Is he little brat, know it all? only you or his parents can judge if hes mature enough to be serious and stick to the rules.

Bring him in the houshold and get him to handle a shotgun and go thru the basics. You will either feel hes ready or not afterwards.

Had my son out at a local club last weekend. Sun and Mon (family day).
Sun we did 2 round's of 5 stand with a new to him 20g micro citori. He loved it! First round he might have went 5/25. 2nd round maybe went 10/25. He even managed a double!
Mon. we did 2 round's of trap. Score was kept by the club. 5/25 and 11/25. In the rain. He loves shooting clays! 24" barrels in a 20g.
We're going back tomorrow for a couple more rounds hopefully of 5stand again.
 
Excellent. Getting younger people introduced to these sports is the only way to preserve them. Every club administrator I speak with has the same struggle, we are blessed in recent years with having picked up a few junior members, and it makes you proud to watch them get proficient at the games.

Great to hear. I live in a small city in the country, and we have very few young shooters showing up to try trap and skeet. I even set up a junior introduction program last spring , where our club was going to supply youth sized guns, ammunition and clays for a four day program at a greatly reduced cost, and we had to cancel because only two young shooters signed up.
 
That's a bummer stubblejumper.
We went out today and did 2 rounds of 5 stand. He did great! We didn't keep score as it goes so quickly here. It's fast shooting and the club doesn't keep score for us. He easily was over 50%. In fact he was practically keeping pace with the adults.... even managing doubles where some of us were blanking or dropping one.
It's great to see a smile on his face and see him excited about a sport.
The seasoned guys at the club were great too as they were congratulating him on his pairs and rooting him on.
I think he's hooked for life now. We already discussed how I'll try and keep score for us next week so we can figure out how to improve.
 
This is good to hear! There is a young lad about 10 shoot at a local club around me and he shoots fantastic! He is pumped to be there! I wish I was introduced Erlier in life but it probably would have broke my parents at the time!!!
