I was given a mish mash of bullets and the majority were these, what are they and what could I use them for?

Cast TLG with a gas check.... I'd use em for topping a case with a suitable powder then firing them at a piece of paper with a either a dot star or ring that's clearly visible.... Heh... Couldn't resist :)

Weigh one and then find some cast data... Good score!

They don't get much better than that... Have fun, chamfer your case necks inside before you try seating em, lots of cast gas check data out there for .308 so you shouldn't have issues finding a load... Will work in bolt and gas guns as well as long as the feed ramp is not overly aggressive.

For cast with H4895 you can use the Hodgdon 60% rule and it should keep the load within the velocity limit for cast bullets (they can cause barrel leading above that).
Take any data that uses H4895, use the same weight bullet, and take 60% of the max charge (multiply by 0.6). That is your starting load and you can go up to the normal max charge if you want (but will probably get poor results with cast).

An M1917 would be 30-06 unless it was rebarrelled at some point.
