Someone gave me a box of old ammo and it had these in it along with some very old .308 rounds that look like Brit 303

They look like blank rounds with a crimped top but they say #12 shot, for smooth bore rifles but will work in other rifles chambered for .22 long.

Not finding any real info on them.

I guess I want to know if I can still shoot them and what they were for?

What do you shoot with them?

Humming birds? :)

This is the same box that I have https://www.joesalter.com/category/products/CIL-Whiz-Bang-22-LR-Shot-1962-Issue-Box

Rat shot. Shoots pretty terribly out of rifled barrels and fouls like you wouldn't believe. Effective range of about 10'. Federal still makes the same load.

Yep i use then for rats, squirrels and starlings in the barn. CIL still makes them for 22LR and 22mag. useful ammunition if you can find the time and place for the use

taken two squirrels in the garage that were building a nest. These worked great. I put a post up when I found them as I had never seen them before. longest shot in the garage was about 13-14'. I wouldn't shoot any further than that.

We actually sell quite a bit of this (relatively speaking). We carry #12 shot in 22 LR and 22 WMR and #10 shot in 22 LR.

CCI, Federal and Winchester load it as a "everyday product" in their line-up.

Our main market is farmers shooting small rodents in the barn etc - not wanting a stray "bullet".

I keep a few 22LR and 22mag #12 CC boxes on hand for occasions requiring them, but this "smooth bore rifle" caught my interest. ;)

Remington used to make a smoothbore pump. 22 for these shells. For it's intended niche I bet these shells performed excellently out of a gun like that.

I seem to remember seeing magazine ads for a micro sized skeet launcher intended to be used together with those, they were trying to make a distinct sport out of it.

I'm more curious about the "308 rounds that look like 303 British"...

Pics?

my guess would be either .303 Savage (centre cartridge below) or a wildcat...
