What are these old bullets?

I found them in with all my late grandfather's WWII stuff. Along the bottom edge is "R A 40" spaced out evenly, and the primer caps have been removed. What's with the green painted indents? They were in an envelope along with some Nazi items he had collected while in Europe.

These are drill purpose rounds.........used to simulate real rounds for dry firing, trigger control, and IA drills.

They look like 303 British,a completely different round from the M1(Carbine).They do appear to be deactivated/training rounds.

Definitely not .303 Brit, as they do not have a rim.
Not deactivated, as they were never live.
They are training rounds, the flutes are to positively ID them as such.

In the early day of World War II, the Americans supplied various firearms to the British such as the P14, P17, M1 Garand, etc that went to supply the British Home Guard.

In Skennertons book on the Enfield, he tells of Canada itself being issued 8,100 M1 Garands during the second world war. I believe that these rifles ended up guarding Canadian airfields in France during the 1950's. I was told this by a retired RCAF Air Policeman who was stationed there at the time.

Your 20mm was made by Dominion Rubber Munitions, in Trois Rivieres, Quebec. They made .50 Vickers as well. My father-in-law was part of the office staff. Among his mementos of the period is a 20mm dummy with engravings to denote it as a replica of the 20 000 000th 20mm round made there.

Canadian marked U.S. M17, red band painted around forstock marked "30-06"

The other 2 rounds beside the 20mm are 50 cal. Can they be used to make live rounds? (Just incase I ever get a 50 cal gun.)
