My son lives to hunt and I know here he is all the time and who he is with he is now 16 and I have no worries not yet anyhow.

Hunt with your Kids not for them.!!!!!!!!! May be we need to become more proactive and start to develop a youth hunting program for the less fortunate or single families which would introduce hunting and hunting ethics to our youth. They may not use it today but later down the road they just might.. We do alot of talking but what are we doing to counter these groups as hunters???

First and foremost we CANNOT divide into smaller groups like hunters, target shooters, collectors, LEO's, non LEO's etc etc etc. We MUST remain one large group and stick together and support each different groups needs.

Once we divide into separate groups we have become several minority groups rather than one large group that holds the same interests. Several smaller groups makes it easier to dessimate a certain group. It may be the pistol shooters that go first. Then the AR people. Next the high powered rifle. One by one they will slowly disappear and if neither group stands up until it is their area that comes up then we have already lost. The anti's dont care if your guns are for hunting, target shooting, collecting, competition. All they care is that one by one they want each group to go away.

large problem... shrinking population where hunting has been traditional, and cultural, being suplanted by immigration where hunting is not seen in the same light...particularly in urban areas.

Take a page from the liebral play book... start to focus on promoting hunting to new Canadians. This way you get two benefits from the price of one. New members entering the hunting fraternity from visable minorities making it hard for the anti-s to attack them for fear of being called racists.
A nice win-win situation all around.

I'm purely a hunter.

I go to the range to practice my shooting for hunting situations.

However, I also have my restricted license, because my Grandfather and I used to shoot together. And, I know a few people who invite me out to the range every so often to shoot pistols. I don't own one, but I enjoy it.

I speak for all shooters when I'm involved in a conversation with an 'anti'. It doesn't matter if they're anti-handgun, anti-black rifle or anti-hunting. If one of our shooting pastimes goes down, as in the case of the most recent issue with the proposed handgun ban, it's a guarantee that it will begin a domino effect.

Support all the shooting sports, not just one of them, no matter if you're involved in all of them or not. There are other members of this community that don't hunt that support hunters and I do the same for them.

That sums it up nicely!

But the post was specifically asking how to recruit new young hunters and how to promote youth hunting.

Last summer Delta Waterfowl and the Department of Environment (F&W) put on a youth waterfowl workshop, we had about 150-200 kids at this workshop, we covered: species ID, safety, blind building, ethics, ecology, distance judging and skeet shooting. A week later youthe between 12-17 had one day to hunt waterfowl 2 weeks before the regualr hunting season opened.
We had a few kids come that did not have ANY hunting experience or family member that hunt.

Later in the year just before hunting seaon we had a Novice Upland day to introduce all new hunters to the sport, basically it was information and safety, then the kids (or Novices) got to shoot some pheasants.
This was sponsored again by the province and by the Ruffed Grouse Society.

I think the best way to encourage young people to get into hunting is to find a way to reduce the cost of getting into the sport. There's so much stuff to buy and then there's all the licenses and what not that it can be somewhat intimidating.

Agreed with you all I work for a hunting organization Safari Club International and I we support all forms of hunting shooting sports. what I was trying to get at was. We do alot of #####ing but what are we doing to prevent the anti's from winning thier mandate? I tried to organize with the childrens wish foundation and the pther one and they flatly replied that they do not support any wishes invloving firearms aor hunting. So much for granting dieing kids thier last wish we do this in the US but haven't yet in Canada. We need to team with something like Big Brothers or Sisters to take children out hunting nationally. Or to make the less fortunate have the ability to get outdoors if you will. Whether it be hunting or shooting at the range it doesn't matter what matters is that we get active with the youth today.

Here on PEI, our PEI wildlife Federation has a contract with the province to do all the Firearms and Hunter safety courses. They are provided at no charge to youth.
Hunting Licenses I believe are no charge under 16 (maybe even 18)
All they need to buy is their Migratory birds license.
It is i believe still way cheaper than hockey.

Excellent work all you Mentors out there! We need more individuals like you to promote the shooting sports in every area. Start them out plinking with
22's and work their way up.
