What are you looking for in a Tactical stock?

I shoot an A5 MacMillan now on an accurized Rem 700 action. I find it OK. It was pillar bedded and it has kept its zero all winter. It would not shoot well (1 ½” @ 100) until it was pillar bedded. Now I am very happy with the performance of the stock, ¼ to ½ MOA out to 1000 yards. I have had 2 H-S stocked guns, 700’s in the past and those stocks seemed more comfortable to me (subjective I know) and just as reliable. They also had to bed. I think now most of the high end stocks, and even some low-end stocks, are quite well made and pillar bedded will give satisfactory results. If I were building another precision rifle I would go with a laminated wood. They are warmer on your face in the winter, can be easily shaped, and are really quite cheap in comparison to every thing else available. I prefer a wide forend and I like to be able to adjust for length of pull. I prefer at least 14” from the trigger to the but. I have never had much use for adjustable cheek rest, just something else to break and extra weight. I change the height of the rings and bases to get proper scope height. I do prefer a detachable box mag, I am currently using a H-S precision model. It is acceptable, but I think there are some better systems now available. My $0.02

I am in the market for my first tactical stock so I don't have anything to say 'that works for me'. What I'm looking for, in no particular order are:

Adjustable cheek piece - Internal mechanism or slots/bolts: whichever is lighter.
Adjustable butt plate (i.e. length of pull adjustable - inserts/plates are probably best to keep weight down).
Good quality recoil pad.
Drop in installation (a real challenge because I'm looking for this stock for a new Stevens 200 with the in-stock in-line feed magazine and slightly wider than older Savages action screw spacing).
A forend that is stiff enough to take a good solid sling up position.
Butt hook.
Swivel studs for a bipod AND sling.
Aluminium bedding frame.
Inlet for a bull barrel - my current barrel isn't that big but I will likely replace the barrel sometime in the future.
A maximum delivered to my door price of $700.00.

Really nice to haves:
Spaces for additional weights to adjust the balance and overall weight of the stock/finished rifle.
A stock that is available in Canada without a 6 to 12 month wait and any import licensing requirements (what a pain in the butt).
A price of at or around $500.00 (how's that for a challenge).

The McMillan A5 looks as good as I'm going to find. The Robertson Interceptor looks good and Ian says he can custom inlet it (once I send him my barreled action) too and in the long run is probably what I will get - the higher cost means I have to wait a while before taking that leap.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers,

Fusilier, You won't get ours for your max price with those options I am afraid. This is made in Canada as are all of our stocks and hardware. It was designed for the RCMP, the grip is from our H&H model and the butt hook was added as retailers said "it"s got to have it". The forend is quite wide so that a night vision mount can be added to the stock. It can take a pad only, a spacer butt or our three way butt. Cheek adjuster also adjusts sideways and we have three different adjuster types we can install. The T3 version should be in a few weeks as I have many orders to fill.

I remember way back. Ian when I got my stock from you(Savage 110FP)...I said you should add the butt hook!!LOL

you also did the inletting for the old girl too,Topnotch work

a uk company makes a mag housing for rem 700 223 that takes ar15 mags. Now convince Ottawa its for a bolt action rifle.

Something to think about before adding this bell or that whistle - will the rifle be so specialized that it would be awkward to use except on a formal shooting range from the prone position? Can it be hand held? Would it be convenient, comfortable and practical to use standing, kneeling, sitting, squatting, or from an improvised rest? Is it so heavy that it would require a gun bearer or wheels?

I never expected to get everything I wanted for the max price I wanted. I understood this thread was about what we were looking for in a tactical stock and not what we expected to actually find. Anyway, the thread is very interesting and I still have to get my new scope mounted on my new rifle so I won't be looking for a new stock until I've converted a fair number of loaded rounds into empty casings as fodder for reloading.

I will look you up again when I get near to getting a new stock.

Cheers,

The MilCun TS1 sniper stock answered all those concerns for me. I put one under my 700 Rem 308 and it is the most comfortable stock to use and carry of any that I've tried.
