Hi guys. What bases/rings are you using for the vanguard 2. I see there are the talley lightweights availiable here, but are there 2 pice bases that I can slap my own rings on? One piece bases?

Talley makes a one piece alloy Picatinny in both long and short action offerings. Other than the Talley rings/bases, I believe the Vanguard S2's/Howa1500 accepts Remington 700 bases so the sky ought to be the limit. Correct me if I'm wrong.

S1 Vanguards are pretty close to Remington 700 but not quite. The rear needs to be .008" higher on the Vanguard compared to the 700, and the short action Vanguard has different spacing of the front to rear mounts than a 700 short action. A one piece mount for a 700 long action will fit a Vanguard long action though. The .008" difference in the rear mount is something I found on the Talley website. Based on this, I used 700 Talley lightweights on my .243 with a .008" shim under the rear base. Bore sighting it looked close enough, so I took the first shot at 100 yards, bang on. I've also got a 30-06 with a one piece 700 base that I didn't shim, and it required quite a bit of elevation to get on target. I would guess that the S2 Vanguards will be the same as the S1 version for scope mounts.

I have Talley Lightweights on all four of my VGII's.

They also make more typical bases and one piece rails as has been noted.

Talley, unlike everyone else actually has a different part number for the Vanguards/Howa's compared to the Rem 700's which just about every other mfg considers "close enough". I prefer a "perfect fit", which I have got with the Talley's.

If you don't typically remove your scope then the lightweights are excellent and there is a whole lot less to loosen up, get misaligned or go wrong with. And I have 40 and 42 mm scopes mounted with "lows" - can't do that with everyone's offerings.

I've found the Talley's to be a wee bit of a concern.
Put the level on the rear base and levelled it up.
Hung the level off the barrel and kept it on the same keel as the base level.
Put on the front base and checked it with the level and it sits \ or / slightly more
than it's partner.
Swapped it end for end and it was better.
Not a big issue unless you need the room to move the scope too or fro.
Same can be had for Weaver bases.
Not sure what the issue is, bad drillings or misconscrewed base faces?
Hence the idea of lapping the bores.

Pay attention folks, the better the mounting, the less the stress.

Burris 2-piece bases (#410600) for Rem 700 short & long action fit great on my Vanguard Blaze.
These give you 3-slots on the front base and 2 slots on the rear so you have a number positions to adjust your rings to.

Short actions I have Warne Maxima or Weaver Grand Slam steel bases, long action I use Remington 700 integral rings which were $30 at Wolverine supplies.

i had rem 700 bases but the rear base didnt sit right, i cant remember why but the vanguard bases have holes in a different place although the spacing between them is the same. i mounted the scope with the 700 bases but replaced them later so i could turn the base with the groove farther back to locate the scope where i wanted. i would get dedicated vanguard- howa rings they make them for a reason

I believe EGW and Ken Farrell make rails to fit the Weatherby Vanguard as well. I have Talley Lightweights set up on both of my rigs.
