What are your favourite mods to the SKS?

I think you missed the point of my post.

The cliche "do what you want with your own rifle" and "everyone has a opinion"sentiment is fine, but that has been relayed forever here without much effect.

I what I basically inferred was for the mod haters to pound sand, as they are posting in a thread that is clearly about, and geared towards users who like to mod their SKS.

So, create a thread were they can talk about how modding the rifle is not needed and cosmetically frivolous.

Except they won't, because it wouldnt be as pleasurable to do as it is here.

There is an element of satisfaction that would be lost in "schooling" the tacticool crowd. Sad but true.
Ya well.... oh ffs never mind.

purists will always jump on these types of threads and tell us what to do with our rifles. because they know know what is best for us and we cant tell them otherwise. Could you imagine what a purist thread would be like?

Title: Show us what you did to your unmodded SKS today

replys:

looked at it

cleaned it

shot it

looked at it again

thread locked due to lack of interest.

^LOL^ You just described my experience in this thread only from a different perspective.
Ya know, I never told anyone what to do with their rifle. I just told about my experiences and how I came to the conclusion that almost everything I did was a waste of time and money. Thats how it went for me. The problem I had was a certain elitist mod know it all jumped on me and started to lecture me like I couldn't possibly know what I was talking about and he was here to help me out like I was a blithering idiot. I never asked for help and I did not take too kindly to the attitude. I don't consider myself a "purist" and I really don't care what others do with their stuff, I just wanted to to tell about my experiences.

Hmm, last time I checked this thread was about what mods you like to do to a SKS, not whether or not a SKS should be modded.

Maybe the SKS mod haters should start their own thread to play in? Instead of trampling through ones like this.
But I guess that wouldn't be as fun for them...

Stupid mods are stupid mods. There are a bunch of nicely done rifles here, but I can't help but laugh at the people who think $500 of sh*tty accessories will somehow make a rifle better. Like a Honda Civic with a fart can on it, it deserves derision.

It really depends on what you plan on doing with your SKS. Firstly.. they are great "out of the box" I have had both..china & Russian. For some reason I always got a little better accuracy from the china model. You can set it up for Hunting, 3 Gun comp.,range plinker ECT. I don't bother getting into the Black Stock thing anymore, its fun,..been there done that...now I just set them up to be accurate and functional. Here are some mods I like to do...
1- get rid of the Bayonet "lighter carry Bush gun"
2-attatch sling "needed for tromping through bush"

3- Closed bolt modification. Simply grind off the left & right edge of the bottom of the bolt, now the magazine will go right in with a closed bolt.

4- Dremell out wooden stock to fit tapco mag.

5- extend the mag release ,"original one is very small." I just weld on a little tab.

6- setting the SKS for long range. simply remove bayonet and install this "light weight" bipod.

100_4013_zpsd436e32e.jpg

7- trigger job with lighter springs. "really helps" Be careful on the mag realease spring "it also works the SEAR. If you put a very light spring in, you'll be in for a surprise.
8- Mag wege full rail for optics "up graded version." one piece.
9- A name brand scope. I like Redfield 3x9 Revenge. $200 at Frontier fire arms. Excellent, very clear , holds zero. Never had much luck with Nc star.

Its a blatent misconception that modding an SKS alludes to the owner thinking they have improved the platform. Its a cheap and fun project for some. That's it. The end goal is mainly rooted in The comfort and asthetics of a rifle that is plentiful and abundant. No big deal.

But, some anti modders still prefer to throw stones and present hostile, sarcastic attitudes towards their fellow firearms owners.
Also, most modded SKS owners myself included, own multiple examples of the rifle as well namely all original, unmodded ones. (Gasp!)
So the preconceptions are largly unwarranted, particularly in this thread.

I have an extensive collection of unissued/unrefurb Russians as well I like to mod, mostly coloring stocks. I have an extensively modded Chinese 56 I use for hunting. I like both sides of the coin. The collector and the modder.

Modding is all part of the fun. It's how you learn! What better way to learn than taking a $175 rifle and putting $3000 worth of mods on it? Learn pretty quick. (and then some jerk offers $150 to buy it from you, "its just an SKS..")

That 'jerk' is giving you a fair offer. If you permanently modify it from it's original state, why should it be worth the same?

If I buy a car and cut parts off of it, I don't go asking what I paid for it. Much the same if I put a bunch of crappy mods on it as well, especially ones that give people with experience the impression that I don't know what I'm doing.

Like I said, there are good mods and bad mods. NCStar isn't. Bi-pods attached directly to barrels aren't. Clamp on 'see-thru' scope mounts aren't either.

But hey, it's your money, feel free to piss it away!

I'd reassemble it like it came, and then that is worth the $150. The guy can buy the mods elsewhere or agree on a deal, they'll sell either way, but you wouldn't get the 3000 back out of them as you would the cost of the rifle.

Interesting.....now that its NOT a semi automatic anymore,...can it have a larger mag capacity ???? There is no restriction on lever guns, and I don't think there is any on bolt guns "enfield 303" I could be wrong.

I didn't make this mod permanent, take the pump off and put back the gas tube and piston and it is still a semi-auto. At this time it wouldn't be a good idea to install a higher capacity mag. It is possible that after I get a chance to shoot a hundred rounds through it that I may like it and make the mod permanent by welding the gas port. (This one is a Norinco and I have an untouched Russian to blaze away with when I'm in the mood to shoot semi-auto.) Probably could get away with a higher capacity mag then but if I don't hit my game with the first shoot I probably wouldn't hit it with the tenth anyway :)
