What are your groupings at 100 yards with a 17 hmr

Depends on the wind, our range gets a lot of wind and it swirls around at the end of the berms and I find that the .17 is really effected by even a light wind at 100+ My best group was 3/8"... The one and only time that I had the wind completely stop long enough to get off 5 shots with that rifle... Most of the time 1-1.5"...

Best I've managed with my Marlin 917 is 1/2" @ 100 yards, but I'll be honest...most groups are in the 3/4"-1" size. My nephew (24 years my junior) can do 3/4" most of the time, if not better. What does that mean? I miss the odd gopher with it, he misses almost nothing out to 125 yards...and very little out to 150 if the wind is modest. I stick with the 22. I seem to be able to put those where I need them more reliably. Not that it makes allot of sense. lol

My son used a Savage 93R17 GV for a while but got bored and sold it.

From a bipod (off the bench), He was consistently shooting 10-shot groups at 100 yards that you could hide with a Dime. That equates to about 1/2 MOA

He tried every make of ammo and ended up only using Federal 17gr V-Max blacktip (2,550fps) to get this kind of result. Most brands of .17HMR ammo were absolute crap by comparison (in his rifle)...

It's too bad your son didn't appreciate how unbelievably unique his rifle was to be able to consistently shoot ten-shot groups at 100 yards that can be covered with a dime.

With a 3-9x optic. Im willing to bet I could squeeze em a bit tighter with a higher power magnification.

It did take some ammo testing to do this.

I shot for one of the challenges on here last spring, think it was 4 5shot groups under 1" at 100 - I did quite a few 3/4" groups but not 4 on the same paper under 1". It will average bit under 1" but hasn't been out since.

Mine is an early M77/17 no mods with the 8lb + trigger.

.17 HMR GROUPINGS: CZ 455 Varmint, Heavy Barrel

I bought a CZ 455 Varmint, heavy barrel in .17 hmr a few months ago. The first day I brought it out to the range, I got these results, shooting the 200 round box of CCI A17, 17 grain, and Hornady V Max at 100 yards:

In more than a few instances, I was getting figure 8's, touching, or overlapping. Note the 3, 1" squares on the top left of the target paper, and the letter "O" in the word "Shooting" at the top left of the target paper. Those shots were all deliberate, and I was astounded at this rifle's accuracy.

If you really want to have some fun testing the accuracy of your .17 HMR:
• Drill small pilot holes with a 3/32 bit on an impact driver, about 1/4 inch deep on the top edge of the target board, and about 2" apart.
• Cut a handful of toothpicks in half, and insert the thicker end of the toothpick into the holes, so the pointed end is sticking up, about half an inch or so.
• Spike small 1 - 1.5" potatoes on the toothpicks. — On a standard target board, about 16" wide, I can get about 8 or 9 of them on the board
SEE: https://postimg.cc/image/459iuq4pp/ (This is a narrower target board at a friend's farm at 100 yards) but you get the idea.

And then move up to smaller things, like red cherries, or walnuts, even cherry tomatoes, if you can actually sight them, you can hit them.

LOTS of fun. If you can hit them in succession, you've got a damn accurate rifle. I should add though, I tried a different CCI .17 last week, 20 grain, hollow points, and the accuracy wasn't the same. I got a wider spread, and not nearly as "pin-point" as the A17. But it was a clean barrel, and different ammo. I'm going back to the A17 this weekend, to see how it changes the POI again.

A note to people who own CZ 452, or 455's, — Great video on action screw tension in pounds, and the effects it has on accuracy:

I had a YoDave trigger kit put in, and I asked the gunsmith to tighten the action/trigger guard screws to exactly 30 pounds. But I hadn't fired the rifle before the trigger upgrade, I have no idea how accurate the 455 would have been at 25 pounds. — CZ's factory specs for the trigger/action screws is 25 pounds.

All rifles not just CZ can be affected by action screw torque specs...

Proper bedding, ammo testing and torque ladder testing can all be done to ensure the most for accuracy out of all rifle caliberes.

Shame the 17HMR does not have match ammunition that can give consistent velocities yet.

These .17 caliber rifles are deadly accurate. I have a Ruger 17HMR American, mounted a cheap scope on it and punch holes in paper where ever I want the bullet to go at 100 yds easily. I can't say about wind as I don't really pay attention to it, though I should. It seems no matter what make rifle you buy in the 17 shooters rave at their accuracy. My Ruger came with a second longer stock, adjustable trigger. Bolt was sticky out of the box but a good clean-up and it slides so smooth with no slop. I consider the this rifle a mid priced gun with top price precision.

Yea, I absolutely adore the cartridge im sad it is not more main stream. Enough at least to warrant match ammo.

It is my go to critter get'r for small game. I shoot grounded crows, ground hogs and tree rats with it. Absolutely love it.
