What are your latrine methods on a hunting trip?

When my family used to go hunting, there would be about 5-6 of us and 2 would be women. So with respect to privacy for them my dad would always bring a large ground sheet, nails, hammer which was always in the truck, tp, wipes, s**t chair (like T-Star) . He would go back in the woods find a spot dig a good size hole and if he was lucky he would find trees close by to attach the tarp to or he would make his own posts. When you used it you would put some of the dirt back in the hole to keep down the smell. It was the Laidlaw s**t shack.

Important note: He would only do this if the trip was lasting a week or so. for regular occasions- Tp, wipes, dig your own hole far enough from camp so dad couldnt smell it. If he did he said " s**t on your hands will be the last thing you'll be worried about"
Ah good child hood memories;

We hunt out of permanent tree blinds, so we made a box and added a toilet seat with the lid ( it helps keep the seat clean ). We dig a hole at the begining of the season, place the box over the hole and add dirt as needed. It's mostly used by my 13 year old daughter ( she hasn't learned to pee standing up yet nor does she have the interest to learn which is a good thing.:D). TP is a must. I like the idea of the gloves. We always carry some for the gutting and never thought of using them for wipping.

Now I don't know about you guys but here in Quebec 90% of the deer hunts that I have been on has been in below 0 temperature and usually have snow on the ground. I have had chocolate bars and water freeze in my pack Now I would like to see some guy using frozen wet wipes. Would it not just smear everything? Before you know it you'll have a streak half way up your back.

A coffee can or rolling tobacco can for the TP. Labelled of course. Don't leave it exposed or it will collect moisture and field mice.

Designate pissing areas too. The old army trick is to bury a plastic tube (4-6" dia) on an angle like a mortar. There was a funnel and a drain pipe set up on the porch of one hunting camp I knew. It keeps the peeing concentrated in one place rather than everywhere and getting on clothes and shoes and equipment ....

The book on how to s&*t in the woods is not just for giggles. Females have a different set of circumstances, and a formal sitdown facility isn't always practical. There are little female funnels available for their needs that reduce the number of layers they need to remove to go.

If I'm just out for the day, it's wherever's handy. I'll dig up the sod/moss whatever with my knife, then put it back over.

If I'm making camp near my vehicle, I have a hammer, a few long spikes, and a 3-4' piece of 2X4. I'll nail it at the appropriate height between a couple of trees and dig a small hole under it. I take the 2X4 off when breaking camp.

I may be weird, but in a camp situation I always burn my TP.

Along with toilet paper, I always carry disposable vinyl or rubber gloves, which cost about $ 10.- for 100. That way your hands are as clean as they were before and after.

do you wear them gloves at home? while taking a dump as well.we will sure as hell need to see some pics of that setup :p

note on those fancy legged donut holes- make sure the legs can take your weight before commiting to a full sit down- they're only cheap aluminum rods and will bend if they're over-stressed, leaving you with a surprise, and dirty bottom

Mount a toilet seat onto plywood and a couple of 2x4's, nail that to trees, dig a hole, wrap plastic three sides, top for wind and water break. Don't forget plastic sheet from seat to ground at your feet for men, women don't need this.

During a hard day of hunting , if i have to go #2 i angle the truck on the road . I can open the passenger door , squat down and with the truck angled no one can see me . After i'm finished i bring the revs up to about 4 grand , dump the clutch and fire my masterpiece into the treetops .

You bastard! You owe me a keyboard!

It is not a stupid question but there are stupid hunters.

I know of a gang of hunters from Lloydminster that frequent the same area as us and those pinheads just walk into the shrubs off the cutline near their camp. There's 9 guys in that camp and let me tell you after a week there is an amazing amount of #### in the trees. I imagine there are accidents in the dark where the walk into each other's piles.

What I did was build a rough plywood box, roughly 2' x 3' and just the correct height for a toilet. I got a used lid from an older ####ter, traced the opening on top, cut that out with a jig saw and then screwed that old lid on from the bottom. I added a lid over top that hinges up to keep the whole affair dry.

An essential piece of equipment is an empty coffee can that a role of toilet paper resides in. This is always on the throne, dry and ready for the next user. Well there was one unfortunate incident a couple of years ago, where I carried the bum-wad back to the tent with me. My buddy had to have an emergency #### at midnight and when he got done found the paper missing. I guess he had to crawl back to the tent, with his pants around his ankles, to find some paper. He claims he very nearly shot me in my sleep... :)

We always dig a generous hole in the dirt, mount the biffy over that and have most excellent "movements" all week.
When we're done and camp gets rounded up we bury the results of our "efforts".

I am thinking of hauling a bunch more old plywood to camp to build a simple roof over the ####ter.

My wife bought the bucket/seat outfit long ago when the kids were young as our little 8' pickup camper is sans bathroom facilities. Saved us lots of trips to campground bathrooms during the night.

When camping while moose hunting my kid and I usually fashion a s**tter from a 5 gallon pail , something like the one from Cabellas, except we put the open end down and shoved down a hole(a couple inches) dug in the ground (for stability). An ordinary toilet seat is fastened to the cut open bottom . A coffee can with lid for TP and a small shovel for returning some of the dirt to the hole after each session almost completes the facilities . Washing hands thoroughly should be automatic.
Wood ashes dumped down the hole kills the odour and keeps away flies.
