What are your loads for 223 / 75gr Amax?

I use 25gr Varget with 75gr AMAX's. Brass is Winchester. This load gives sub-MOA in my 24" bull barrelled AR15. The load is slightly compressed. COAL is 2.440", which means that I have to single load each shot. I just put a mag in, lay the cartridge on the follower and release the bolt carrier to load.

Well my Tikka does not like the heavy A-Max bullets. I could not get it to stabilize at anything over 22 grains of Varget. Any more powder and I was getting 5" groups. Maybe the barrel contour is too light for the heavy bullets reguardless of the twist rate. I got a couple of real nice groups with some real slow loads but I hate being able to watch the bullet as it travels down range.

I forgot to take my factory loaded ammo to the range. Maybe tomorrow.

I know 155 A-Max bullets shoot best when touching the lands. I have never had good luck with them, but my buddy swears by them for long range.
I have had good luck with 80 Noslers or SMK. in .223. I use 26 gr of Varget with 80 gr Noslers or SMK's in a 1:9 Kreiger, it still punches round holes in paper at 900m.

Anybody tried this load on a Savage 10 or 12 series 1:9 twist??

Just this weekend I spent time shooting longish ranges with my keeper Savage 12FV. I use 25 grains of Varget, CCI BR4 primers and 75 Grain Hornady AMAX for an average velocity of 2954fps out of the 12FV's 26" barrel. OAL is set at 2.5" and I must load single shot, of course.

To say this load was a success is a huge understatement. I was shooting clays at 550 and 735 meters without problems. A 12" gong at 800 meters was a given on every shot... A target the size of a 2 liter pop bottle was quite easy to "touch" at 1035 meters! And finally 1400 meters plus shot were achieved. I ran out of scope elevation then... I almost want to believe that with a few more MOA's in my scope I could have reached the magic mile!!!

A superb rifle and a decent load for it. I must add that similar results were obtained with 23.5 grains of Benchmark with the same components and specs.

For those who are curious, check out the 2006 Summerland shoot pictures in the precision rifles forums. You can get a good idea of the range and targets as well as admire some of the guns that made it for the weekend.

I was using 24.5 gr Varget in my Stevens 223.

It shot well, with IVI brass it was starting to show signs of pressure, Win/R-P brass seemed a little more consistant.
