What barrel lenght/profile would you use?

MTU is quite the beefed up barrel. Possibly close to a pound heavier than M40 profile.
Don’t know how much more it’s needed.
I guess the fatter it is the stiffer it is, when stiff reduces barrel whip, which then does ???? (I’ll google it to see actual effects of barre whip)

I like it because it heats up a lot slower then a light barrel. After 10 rounds in 2 minutes, the MTU is considerably cooler then my old medium palma.

Wondering at this point if a fluted MTU would be nice?
Probably bring it closer to M40 weight, and MTU can afford a small ridgidity loss.
Don’t even know if fluted MTU exists but sounds nice lol

For your immediate plans, pretty much everything from a 6 BR to a 308 will work just fine. Really what you are comfy with and prefer.

There are alot of options in the prefit world.... just let me know what you would like... See Shilen, Mcgowen and CarbonSix for plenty of options.

Want an octagonal prefit? Yeah, we can do that.

When looking for Savage donors, you want the older slotted barrel nut, side bolt release versions. Accutrigger is fine if you feel that pull suits your tastes.. I really like mine too.

There is a huge cost savings when using a Savage or Rem 783 as a donor - maybe they don't have all the parts options but they do perform very well.

6.5CM is a big debate in my head right now, and i am sure my 308 stuff would sell quick on EE to swap to 6.5CM stuff.
Since i don’t compete and do shoot 150 rounds a month in 0C+ weather, i did not break down cost per round in 6.5CM yet.

As you know I have a 10TR (24inch, .308), and about a month ago I picked up a Savage 11 Long Range Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor to compliment it. Factory ammo (waiting on my die set) is almost boringly consistent out of the 6.5. The very first 3 round group out of the gun was .7 MOA if memory serves. Regarding cost per round. Factory ammo is about the same, reloading is slightly cheaper in the 6.5 (smaller bullets)

It's not like the current rifle i am using is broken and needs to change immediatly.
I still haven't been able to get 25 consecutive rounds under 1/2 moa with it, don't know if i ever will be able, but getting damn close at times. I do feel like i have pushed my reloading far enough to enable this.
For now, i will only order the barrel, action and stock/chassis will come later on. If i decide to go savage/stevens action or ultimatum, it's not something that needs deciding now.
Been researching a bit, 6.5CM sure has nice wind cutting capabilities, and i might as well play with another caliber for a project rifle.

Jerry, in your suppliers (Krieger, Shilen, McGowen), what is the average turnaround for a specific prefit barrel not in stock?
This will determine when i should order and start the process.

Yes i was examinating this, reload cost ain't that much more. Components remain about the the same.

2 to 4 months is typical of manf for prefits... 6.5mm barrels are in very high demand due to surge in 6.5 CM consumption in the US.

Alot of shooters have figured out, prefits make for great shooting set ups with far less costs and down time.

Sooner ... better...

Perfect, i would be ready to order now, but... i just want to look around a few posts in this and other forums, to be sure what i am looking at ain't obsolete and will work well.
So far i am thinking : 6.5CM, 26'' lenght, M40 profile, 5R rifling, 1:8 twist, 3/4x24 muzzle threads

I know very little of 6.5CM, i see that 1:8 twist stabilizes SMK 142gr, but do not even know if that's the weight i should be shooting.
One thing sure, i was surprised to see how B.C. is that much higher than my 175 SMK i currently use.

Your choice of barrel would work well for you. 1:8 twist will stabilize pretty much everything except maybe the brand new SMK 150s. If you're thinking of trying those out, maybe opt for a 1:7.5. Otherwise, 1:8 is the standard and works great with the 140 gr class bullets. The BC for the 6.5mm bullets really is much higher than anything in the 175gr class of .30 cal projectiles.
