Ok guys, i will lay out my requirements and hope you can direct me in the right direction.

I am really partial to Steiners, however convince me otherwise as i am open to anything.


Looking for all around binocs. i don't hunt...yet, but like to do outdoor stuff. Hey, and a little neighbourly surveillance doesn't hurt either does it (especially if the neighbour is hot!):D

Would like crisp and clear optics and good performance in low light conditions.

Weather proofing and the ability to take a beating a must.

What about binocs that have a built in comapss etc? Good idea or just looking for problems?

Always like the tacticool look, but realize many manufacturer's do this as more as packaging than actual performance, just as long as the binocs are not orange!

I wear glasses, how does this affect my choices?

Any other things i should be concerned about?

Tell me what is best value for my money and what is the ultimate to own.

Any links to websites with good info would also be greatly appreciated.

I've been looking for a new set of compact (but not pocket sized) binoculars as well. After all my research I settled on the Kahles 8x42. They are a fully sealed, purged, etc roof prism binocular made by a top quality company which is owned and operated by Swarovski.

They go for ~$700.00 USD, which although expensive seems to be very good value considering the comparable Swarovski branded lenses start around $1300.00 USD.

The best price I've found so far has been through Binoculars.com.

If you're considering the Tasco binoculars we might not be on the same page for glass quality, but good luck!
 
Personally, I never thought expensive binoculars were worth the cost - until I tried a buddy's set of Leicas.

My next binocs will be Leicas... if you want a good deal, contact Gr8fuldug or look for his posts in the dealer announcments section...

Just purchased a pair of minox from him they were demos, but when it arrived it was like new, not a spec of dust on it. Purchase the metered HG version really impressed thus far.

Actually i just saw those while i was typing the emails. i was not really looking at them.

My preference right now is for the Steiners, so i think we are on the same page.

I got a pair of Steiner Night Hunters 8x30, love them! No question the top end Leica's are nice but are they really worth the premium. When I bought mine from the wholesaler he specifically told me to make sure I used them and didn't baby them since they weren't intended to sit on the shelf.

I read a good article a while back comparing roof prisim with porro prism. The popularity of the roof prism design is because it's more compact and lighter, but at the same time more expensive to manufacture since the alignment of the lenses is more critical to achieve a proper image.

Porro prism on the other hand is a little heavier, however the lens alignment isn't as critical which makes manufacturing cheaper and they can take more of a beating before being knocked out of alignment. I've also heard that porro prism gives a better sense of depth where as a roof prisms image is more flat. Most military bino's tend to be of the porro prism design because of their ruggedness.

My preference has always been 10x50 binos. The magnification works where my eyeballs lose definition. I prefer rubber covered to all other surfaces because the stickiness keeps them from sliding around. I also like a 2" webbing neck strap that I adjust fairly short so the binos can go in and out of the top of my jacket. Less bouncing when walking and they are out of the way of rifle slings.

I have had three of four pairs of cheap binos over the years. I rationalize not getting expensive ones because I tend to lose or not baby my optics. If the warranty is lifetime - use it!
 
Nothing beats Carl Zeiss.
Those are the Number 1 watch in ebay for those. Doesnt matter how old they are. Watch for the Quality Number Q1 on the right hand side.
 
Bino's

The best I have found after owning Bausch & Lomb Elites, Nikon, Leupold, and have used my friends Steiners. Minox are just plain amazing binoculars for the money.The work at twighlight better than any I have every used, I use 12x by 52mm and have a brand pair of new 10by 52mm Minox's for sale
 
I bought a pair of Leupold Mesa binocs last year. Rubber coated 8X42 with good glass and the best I've used while wearing glasses.
Instead of rubber eyecups they have solid ones that screw down for use with glasses on. They're medium sized and priced and claim to be 100% waterproof.
I've tried cheaper and more expensive ones but with glasses these have worked best for me.
 
I have a pair of Steiner 8x30 Military/Marine that my wife gave me for Xmas from SIR. I have not used them that much except for spying on the neighbors and a couple of times at the range but am definitely happy with them so far.
