What brass is used in the 30-06 Springfield 180 gr. Supreme Ballistic Silvertip?
I'm wanting to reload with its brass because it seems to be the only 30-06 ammo I can find that never FOE's in my Remington 740 and is increadibly accurate from the box.

I'll take a shot at it. The brass is most likely the same brass that Winchester uses for all it's ammunition, the same as the brass they sell for reloading.

It's definitely not their regular brass. It has a silver color to it instead of the typical brass color.

Here's a pic of the ammo:

probably just the nickel plate version- it's not like they make special runs under a full moon

ya didn't think it was.. was wondering if it was nickel plated or what though..
May just be the load.. but only brass that hasn't had FOEs on the Remington 740

Here's a photo of what it does on top of FOEs to regular brass (Not one of my brass, but does the same thing):

and these silver colored brass (nickel or whatever they are) are not affected at all.. It may be the factory loads.. but figured it might just be cheaper brass in the super-x.

The nickel coating makes it easier to extract. It also provides a harder surface finish.

IIf the tear up ahappens too often and with most brand, i'd personally check for the chamber condition and headspace, there is something wrong if it happens too often (means hard extracting / high pressure or rough chamber).

That say F C C? That'd be Federal. Known to be softer than other brands.
What rifle is tearing the extractor groove?

ya that wasn't mine, just showing the effect that is similar on mine.. with mine it doesnt chip completely off, just indents it out like its about to chip off on the winchester brass.

You should post in the gunsmith section. I'm not a gunsmith but I would be concerned if thats what happened to brass on extraction in a gun of mine.

I will be giving a good clean over tomorrow, and making sure that the brass itself isnt catching in the chamber. You bring up a good point and if its not something that simple I will be doing a post in the gunsmith section.

Cheers.

Do you get the same results when using ammo such as Remington, my guess is that you probably will and that its not just the case.

You cannot buy Winchester Supreme nickel platedl cases new...only in brass.

To get the WS nickel you have to buy WS ammo, and reload with the 1-shot brass....its what I do with most of my calibers for my hunting rounds. Load developement with brass.

ONly Remington has new nckel shell cases for reloading....but I didnt care for Remington.

If you wan really good shell cases for reloading look at Nosler, Norma or Lapua brass.

I use the WS nickel but for my 338-06AI- I use the Norma / Weatherby stamped brass.
