Hi everyone,
Like many of you I have astigmatism and on top of that my eyes aren’t getting any better with age. As such, red dots have never really worked for me and I’m still not 100% sold on a prism either. I find that a LPVO with a true 1x image works better for me than a red dot because of the latter’s smeared blotch of a dot vs. the former’s clearly etched reticle, and any inherent minor distortion or fish eye effect is no worse than what I experience using a prism sight, plus there is the bonus of the ability to zoom in if necessary. So while a bit of blur around the edges doesn’t bother me, a LPVO that doesn’t go down to a true 1x does. Even a 1.25x I find messes me up for close up both eyes open shooting.
I’m my experience, the Vortex Strike Eagle is the best combination of value and features. I picked up a Trijicon Accu-something on a trade once and it was fantastic, but it was not worth three times the price of a Strike Eagle in my opinion, and I would rather have scopes that are good enough for me on three rifles than have one really nice scope on only one rifle. But the VSE isn’t exactly a budget optic either.
I own several Millett DMS scopes in 1-4x, which don’t compare at all with the VSE for light gathering, but for $150-200 used price tags I can’t complain. That said, some of them are truer at 1x than others. Maybe that’s a quality control thing with a budget optic.
So how do other scopes stack up at 1x? I had a Burris M-tac 1-6x but found it was more like a 1.5x. Same with one of the Bushnell AR line I tried. I’ve heard that the Vortex Crossfire II 1-4x might be good.
I see a lot of (what I assume to be) former CF members with their Elcan SpecterDR 1-4x, but assume that’s just a matter of old habits being hard to break, and see a lot of used ones languish on the EE for months unsold, which tells me some people don’t seem to think they’re worth the going price.
What others would you recommend? I’m not looking for any kind of complicated BDC reticle, this would all be for under 200 yards.
Thanks for looking!
