I will start reloading for my 308 pretty soon. I dont want to play ping pong with the bullet.
My new hunting gear is a BSA monarch in 308 cal. I will use it for deer hunting but it might be used as well for Moose.

I have access to Nosler partition or Hornady A-max bullet. I have the idea to used bullets going around 165-168 gr. I will hunt and shoot at distance usualy not exceeding 150-200 yrds.

should I go Hornady or Nosler ?

I will then find the right powder and play around to get the best recipe for my rifle.

Which bullet

I like the noler partition in 150gr in my .308 will do just fine on moose,
I use 165gr noslers in 30.06 also works fine
but saying that 140gr noslers in 7mmwsm works amazingly

My pet load for the 308 was always a 180 partition sitting on top of 43 grains of IMR 4064 in a remington case with a federal 210 primer. Overall length was exactly 2.900", but you may have to go a bit shorter than that. This load in my Tikka 308 would consistently do 0.75" at 100 yards, and a couple times I got under 2" at 300 yards! I don't have a chrony so I can't say how fast it was going. Pressure signs were non-apparent in my set up, but I would recomend starting out a few grains lighter than this and work up in your rifle.

the Partition is not a deer bullet due to the controlled expansion, you need a quick expansion bullet (upon impact - like the ballistic tip).
Parititions are good on moose or other heavy game, cause the controlled expansion causes the bullet to hold the jacket untill it penetrates the hide, then expands.
Practically speaking, both bullets will drop the deer if well placed and within reasonable range. (<200y)
For moose I would definetly go with 180gr Partition.
if I can shoot any game I see, then I load for the highest common denominator.
I did a quick research on the A-max. it is not a hunting bullet.
Hope this helps.

The Partition will open just as fast as a Ballistic Tip, that is the way they were designed. They are NOT a controled expansion bullet.

They have a soft nose with thin jacket that opens on contact regardless of thickness of hide or distance. The partition stops expansion and allows the rear portion to penetrate deep.

There is a very good reason the Partition is the bullet all others are compared to. :D

The original question was about bullets for use on both deer and moose. The Partition is the original "all-round" bullet suitable for everything from bunnies to grizzly bears! ;)

yes, I agree with 'Boo, the Nosler Partition is a great bullet for anything. to quote Nosler from their manual, perfect for anything from mice to moose

150 gr or 165 gr would both be good choices for deer in a 308. personally Id go 165 gr
