What Bullet is best for Moose?

Seeing as we have a what caliber is best for moose, I thought we could discuss what bullet is best for moose as well.

Premium or cup and core...lots of bullets out there..long range, short range, etc? :d
 
Depends on range and cartridge. I've had good luck with TTSX in my .338WM, but longer ranges in a smaller cartridge would probably look at a bonded bullet.
 
Pretty much any hunting bullet out of any reasonable rifle will do the trick nicely when placed in the lungs.
 
I like accurate bullets.

With a bit of a ya but........

Depending on the cartridge they are shot from may dictate the style of the bullet. Take my .25/06 for example, being that it’s a 1in 11.5” twist, it won’t shoot bullets much over 100 grains very well. Partition’s and TSX’s are what I like to run in it, drops moose with authority.

Then there’s my venerable 30/06, 2825fps with 165’s is very doable, and since impact velocities are usually south of 2700fps, good old Sierra Gamekings are my go to.

Finally my .358Win BLR is a beauty when the cover gets tight, 200 grain Hornady SP’s is all I run exclusively in this rifle, moose, deer, bear, no problem.

Then there was my hunting mentor many moons ago, age old 742 Remington in 30/06, Lyman peep sight, and all he ever ran was 150 grain Imperial PSP’s, killed a pile of elk and moose with that rifle, and veritable boat load of deer too.


I really think we are over thinking the need for this guchi bullet vs that guchi bullet, as long as you’re not having impact velocities much over 2800 FPS, any reasonably hunting style bullet will work, sure moose are the biggest ungulate in North America, but they aren’t a Brinks truck either.
 
The one that is palced in the boiler works.
Any of the bullets that are designed and recommended by the manufacturer will work.
The only issue to contend with is if the hunter can place the shot to take care of business.

I have shot a boxcar load of moose in the past 55 years, and the vast majority have succumbed to 165 or 180 Partitions.
That being said, I have killed moose with the old Winchester Silvertip, The Hornady interlock, the Accubond, The Norma Dual-Core,
The Remington Cor-Lokt, the old CIL KKSP, and the Long Range Accubond.

These days, I mostly pack Partitions up the spout. They have proven to be very, very dependable for me. The Accubond is also
decent, but wrecks more meat than the Partition should your shot be off slightly. For really high velocity chamberings, the TTSX
/GMX/E-TIP will work well. Dave.
 
I have only shot moose with TSX, TTSX and LRX in the last few years and don’t plan on changing anytime soon. That being said, I’ve shot them with Sierra Gameking (never again) and Remington Corelokt (good performance) before.
 
Shot placement is the most important factor... and then a bullet designed for the velocities it is travelling... you most certainly do not need the expensive so called 'premium' bullet in the vast majority of cartridges.

Here is a cheap old Hornady from a 7mm-08... lodged on the far side of a large moose at 328 yards. One shot and it did not take two steps...

I have also shot moose with 105 grain Speer bullets out of a .243. No pics it was so long ago.
 
I have seen 2 people have catastrophic failures with federal blur box,one being a short range hit on a white tail shoulder with a .30 cal (i recall it being a 300wm) making a 90 degree turn and tearing down the ribs. I seem to recall having poor performance with I believe a Hornady SST. Thats about it. Everything else has worked, granted some causing horrid meat loss but they didn't fail.
Some of my favourites are TSX, Accubond, and.... cast .490 lead round ball!
 
I've used a lot of different bullets on Moose over the years....most cup and cores seem to be pretty consistent with no surprises, partitions as well as bonded bullets have been good, not at all impressed with Nosler E-tips although I only used them once and that was a 2 years ago out of a 30 Nosler @ 200 yards.

IMHO, Berger hunting bullets seem to be the killing machine, absolutely devastating terminal performance and will drop them on the spot in their tracks more often than any other bullet...:)
 
I've mostly used TSX and TTSX the last dozen years or more. I like that you can drive them through to the vitals from any angle and they don't blow lead shrapnel through the meat.
 
I have hit them with Rem Core lock and hornady interbond at 100 to just over 250 yards. Moose aren't hard to kill,they drop rather fast. Any proper hunting bullet should work well.Its still comes down to shot placement.

I've only shot a half a boxcar of moose, but probably 2 car loads between 1/2 dozen guys I know that role there own. All Hornady, premium bullet with out the ding in the wallet.
 
It’s funny that all bullets work until they don’t. I’ve seen some giant elk with gristle covered bullets nestled against shoulder bones. But yea, they all work.
