What bullet + wieght for my marlin?

As the title says It's a 336 in 30-30. I'm looking for a bullet for deer size game but mostly for punching paper.

I like 150's for target shooting and deer. My gun is partial to Winchester 150gr Silvertips. I have all ways wanted to try 190 grain cast bullets or softpoints.

All I use is 150 grainers and never used anything else. I do cast my own just to be able to shoot more.

in a 30-30 I would go with the 150 grain unless your rifle shot the 170 grain better. Sierra, Speer, Hornady all make good bullets which will perform decent at 30-30 speeds. For moose or elk I would step up to the 150 grain Barnes TSX flat nose...they're wicked looking

Ditto for trying both 150 and 170gr leads. Your rifle will shoot one much better than the other. If you handload, I'd also suggest trying a few different powders. W748, IMR3031, and IMR4198 are good choices.
My wife's doesn't seem to like the 150's unless it's loaded for the fence.

Lyman's 31041 is the classic, 173 gr. flat point gas check bullet, when cast hard, it can be driven at full speed(2100+fps), hits hard and penetrates. Save you a ton of money too.

What do you guys think of the speer flat nose soft points 150g? any good? thats about all my local shop has right now.

Flat point 30 cal bullets are probably intended for the 30-30. Some 150 Round Nose are made for higher velicty calibers and won't expand well. The bullet makers indicate if a bullet is intended for 30-30.

Any of the medium powders will work well. 3031, 4895, N 134, N140, WW748, etc.

For cast bullets, 3031 or 4198 would be about the right speed.

For plinking in my 30-30, I load the 147gr military bullet upside down, and down loaded a bit. looks like a wad cutter.

I've tried Speer 170gr Hot Cor with about 27 gr or H3031, which give 2.5" groups at 100yd. Not spectacular, but good enough for most bush hunting situations.

Do i need to crimp the bullet with it being a tube mag
