I am having a difficult time finding bergers. What would you suggest to use other than bergeres. I am loading for a 6.4x47 8 twist and a 300 WSM, 10 Twist. I have on hand H4350 and I can get R19 and R17. I would like to hunt moose with the 300. I am shooting out of 24" McGowen barrels. I would like to go to Maynards 1 moa challenge with the 6.5.

Despite the migration of many to the Berger VLD bullets, I have found Seirra Matchkings still shoot better in many of my rifles. I still use Bergers in my .260 AI but have recently switched over to 180gr SMKs in my 7WSM from Berger 180 VLDs.

If you are just looking for a target bullet for the 6.5x47 give the Lapua 139gr Scenar a try. For a hunting bullet I still use Matchkings, I have used them for years and have yet to see a deer or moose take more that 4 steps, and usually its bang...flop.

As a dedicated hunting bullet the Nosler Accubonds also work very well, these may be a good choice for the 300WSM.

For the 300 wsm, Barnes 180g or 168g TTSX are (dead rite there) bullets for moose. 130g for white tail.
At a buck or more per bullet these arn't for target shooting.

I agree with the Barnes for hunting. Seem to expand very nicely and have dropped moose with them before. I've been trying out the nosler ballistic tips for a dual purpose round and they been showing very promising results

I used bergers with 27gr CFE223 and it was like looking at a shotgun pattern.....I was embarrased to say i was the shooter.....Im hoping for better groupings with powder weight change

Lapua 123 or 139 - easily gotten from Peter Dobson at Hirsch Precision.
Matrix bullets on Vancouver Island - order online (great bullets, Canadian Made)
Chinchaga Bullets - another Canadian Maker

Thanks for all the reply's. I am trying to source these locally for now without much success. I can get the SMK's and at a significant savings I will give them a try. The worst thing here is if they have the weight you want they don't have the design of bullet you are looking for. If they have the weight and design its for another calliber. AAAHHHH.

IVO- did you quote correctly the match kings for hunting or did you intend gamekings. I was looking at HPBT matchkings.

Yes that is correct, I use Matchkings for hunting. While some will say that the Matchking is not a hunting bullet, doesn't have reliable expansion...blah, blah, blah I have found otherwise. There are many people that use them for hunting, all with excellent results. If you hit the animal in the vitals, it kills every time.

If you are not comfortable with using the Matchking you can usually find a Gameking in a similar weight and they are also a very accurate bullet and work well on game.

A great resource for long range huntung is ....you guessed it, longrangehunting.com. It is very similar to CGN only dedicated to hunting at long range. The guys there are a wealth of information and experience and very open to answering questions on this topic.

I would like to end by saying I do not advocate any target bullet as a hunting bullet! The Matchkings have worked flawlessly for me and many others on game however the Lapua Scenar for example, while being one of the best(if not the best) target bullet is a terrible choice as a hunting bullet. There have been actual field tests on many of these bullets done by hunters/shooters at various ranges to see how these bullets react when impacting a simulated animal. When I say "simulated animal" they will take a piece of carpet over a beef shoulder bone and ballistic gel to simulate going through the skin and shoulder into the vitals of a moose or elk for example.

Check out longrangehunting.com, it will answer many of your questions on this topic, and probably many others as well.

Matrix bullets for the 300 the 21's are exceptional and some new 185 creations that aren't too shabby. i don't know enough about the matrix 6.5 to comment other then the fact he makes quality bullets

the Lapua 139 have a large following Ask Peter Hirsch for those.

My 6.5x47 Lapua loves the Lapua 123 Scenars with RL 15. I shoot paper, steel, and coyotes with this load. I shoot Hornady 168 Amax's for Hunting out of a 300 Win Mag. While lots of people say they are no good for hunting they have sure worked good for me on moose, mule deer, & whitetail. I have made clean ethical shots to 550 yards and as close as 50 yards and everything has died quick. Just my experiances.

I recently went to the 129gr VLD from Matrix Ballistics for my .260

I had much better luck with these over the Bergers, they seem to be less picky about seating depth in my rifle. 30" Shilen Select Match barrel 1:8.5
