What caliber do you suggest?

I started out wanting a .223 for coyotes but first appropriate deal that came up was for a .22-250 so I took it. Nothing wrong with it but I still wanted a .223 so I got one and sold the .22-250. I didn't need an alternative coyote calibre but for other reasons I eventually bought a .243. The .223 is still my first choice for coyotes but if I want to reach out beyond the .223's effective range I like the .243 a bit better than I liked the .22-250.

I think the 22-250 would have made a good choice as well, but the deal on the 243 was saving me at least $100, which I can put towards brass, dies and bullets.

All I care about really, is dead coyotes to help protect the deer and small game that I love toeat.

You will enjoy the 243.

I am considering picking up a savage axis for, well why not, but seriously thinking about doing some coyote control. I could use my various .30 calish milsurp rifles, but I am not confident in their accuracy potential on smaller targets at longer ranges. My .35 Whelen is just too much gun at closer ranges. My caliber choices then come down to .22-250 and .243 Win. Does anyone have a preference with some practical experience? I will be using factory ammo at first, but then rolling my own as I pick up dies and brass.

Either of these are suitable for coyotes. The 243 Win is the superior cartridge.

I MAY take a crack at foxes over the winter as well, but coyotes would be my primary concern.

Unfortunately, both the 22-250 and 243 will demolish foxes, which would be a shame, as they have really beautiful pelts.

I ended up picking up a .243 for $299 at the hock shop with scope and sling. Bought a box of Winchester 100 gr loads because that's all I could find. I'll be loading for it eventually, but it's factory for now. I need to get out and sight it in for now.

Good price if it shoots well, congrats.
What brand and model did you end up with?
Synthetic or wood?
Barrel length and twist rate?

Savage Axis, 22", 9.25 I believe. Blued? Looks black and synthetic stock.

its wearing a low end Bushnell 3-9x40 which will do for now. I'll replace it with a better scope down the road. I need to get it to the range and see how it does first. Bushnell makes some decent glass, but I don't think this one is one of the good ones if it came as part of a package rifle that sells for about $400 new.

I think the Bushnell Banner is the scope that comes with the Axis packages... Not spectacular, but the price is right.
