what caliber for my new sheep rifle

You might not like it, and that's OK, but it would be very hard to deny that it's a very good round and that there really hasn't been a much better non-magnum cartridge introduced since the 270 came on the scene.

So what can a 270win do that a 280AI can't do better?I reload so factory loads are not an issue. And I do take plenty of ammunition on a hunt,so I never need to buy any while on a hunt.

When I said "introduced", I was referring to factory offerings. If the AIs are that good, everyone would want one and the factories would offer them in factory loads and rifles.

How much flatter shooting would a 280AI be than a 270?

I'm going to start out by saying that, in my oppinion, you shouldn't think about any of the AI cartridges. Generally, when higher velocities are being achieved with these cartridges, it is mostly due to higher pressure, and though many may disagree with me on this matter, ther is still the fact that straight-walled cases do not feed as well as those with a bit of taper. If the rifle is to be specialized for sheep hunting; or even sheep/deer, there is still no better cartridge than the 270win. There is a reason that this cartridge is still popular after 84 years.

According to the Nosler data, the 280AI drives a 10gr heavier Accubond(130gr vs 140gr) with a highr B.C. at over 150fps more than the 270win.With a 200 yard zero, that amounts to about 2-1/2" difference at 400 yards and about 5" difference at 500 yards.

Absolute B.S.Higher velocity cartridges almost always produce higher velocity because of larger case capacity, not because of higher chamber pressure. That applies to most cartridges, not just the AI cartridges.

As far as feeding goes,my 280AI feeds just fine.

LG, are you being sarcastic? FFS I hope so. FWIW, the difference in the real world is at most about 6" at 500 yards, and they are both down >3 feet with a 200 yard zero.

Ya I was, SuperCub :p
As for the wall, and feed, well I figure it this way, a fella can go off the rack, and get super results, in many calibers, factories count on it.
For some, I are one, go the extra mile for fun, and added accuracy ,and wood :cool:custom, better loads , with better bullets , fair to say the savings on premium stuff would require research, where $$$ savings is looked at as a factor to reload, ammo is $$ for the good stuff, also an area to research.
And their some, :D that just don't fit factory stocks..

here's the data from the sierra manual on the 25-06AI
120gr SGK max vel 3200fps with 54 or 55 grains of RL22, 4831
My actual load is 53.5gr RL22 for 3150fps which shoots .45" out of my cooper with 26" bbl,
25-06 is 3000fps, same bullet and powder
257wby is 3200fps, same bullet with 4831
257bob is 2800fps same bullet with RL22
257bob AI is 2900fps with 4831
So the AI's ain't gonna be gods gift to the rifleman but I like them anyways

my2 cents

I would go 260 Remington or 6.5x284.
I am planning a 260 Remington conversion shortly.
I like that the 260 Rem brass can be formed from 308 or 243 Brass.

If you are counting votes I'll have to go with 280. I've made a few 500 yd 1 shot kills with mine. There is no magic pill, practice with what u buy will do the trick. Enough energy at 500 is more important than what it's called.

Cooper, Nosler and Kimber offer the 280AI in factory rifles...there are probably others...I'm building another one...it came down to the 7 Rem Mag or the 280AI.......sold the last one...new owner loves it......what ya say Mur?

Aside from the .22-250AI I swiped from Stonechaser,Rembo's old .280AI is the most accurate rifle I have ever owned(and I've had some good ones!).We're talking 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups at 200yds,and a better rifleman than me could probably do better. It will be going with me on a sheep/goat/caribou hunt this fall.I'm sure that I'm not the only one on this board that knows,Rembo builds accurate rifles.
