what caliber for my new sheep rifle

When it comes right down to it, the 30-06 makes a lot of sense. In fact it is hard to find a cartridge that makes more.

Even for sheep.

Yet it offers nothing over and above any of the other cartridges mentioned previously, except a little more recoil, and more bullet drop than most of the others.:D

an extra 2-3" of bullet drop at 1/4 mile doesn't matter

Guessing how high to hold is for losers, and any grown man who can't handle a 30-06 better look between his legs and see if anything is still there haha ;) jk

It's not a matter of not being able to handle the recoil,I can handle 300ultramag recoil just fine. But I won't deal with recoil unless there is some advantage to be gained by using a cartridge that produces more recoil. The 30-06 offers no such advantage, the 25-06,257wby,and 280rem all shoot flatter with less recoil, and all offer more than enough power to kill any sheep.

Did I mention I shot that ram at 423 yds

Are you trying to tell us that you couldn't have done that with a 25-06,257wby,280 or 280AI?

This is the same rifle rebarreled to 280 AI.

If the 30-06 was so great, why did you rebarrel it to 280AI?

How does a liberal find the Sheep in the tall grass?
He finds them delightful oh sorry wrong kind of sheep Baa.

I think what Chuck was meaning is, the 30-06 works jsut as well as the others, despite being handicapped so much by an extra #### length of bullet drop at 1/4 mile.

Reading both of your statements, I can understand why you are so upset.:D

waa waaa waaa

Cheer up shorty, crying won't help your situation.

Bigbear, you need to start more posts. This is great reading!

My2cents: Personally I'm with the plain old 270. It doesn't really matter too much what you're packing (within reason), as long as you can shoot it well.
There's not two types of dead.

Here are drop charts from the 2 rifles I use. Not much difference at 500 yards. Except 1 is a 338 & 1 is a 6.5mm.

Everybody has there favorite rifle. My 338 Gaillard & 264 Win Mag are mine. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot 500 yards with either. The 264 is getting a new tube so the 338 is my baby right now. Hopefully the 264 will be done for the upcoming season. The data provided on the 264 is with the old Shilen barrel it had.

Over all the years & all the rifles I've had the one thing I've learned is knowing you equipment is key. The caliber of choice is not as important as knowing what that caliber will do for you in a field situation. The more familiar you are with your rifle the better you will shoot.

I also believe in big bullets. 250's for the 338 & 140's for the 6.5mm. BC is better in heavier weight bullets. This is my feeling on the issue. Decide what weight of bullet you want to shoot & go from there. This is only one mans opinion though and you know what they say about those.
