What caliber for Wolves

I shot my last wolf @ 220 yards used a 22-250 with 60gr Sierra Varminter HP's @ appr 3500 - 3550fps bullet entered and exited side ways thru the chest it drop instantly.

My buddy has shot dozens of wolves uses an old beater 22-250 with 52gr Speer HP's @ 3700fps has never lost one.

During big game hunts wolves will be shot with whatever I'm packing. However, when predator calling around here, I generally carry a .223/45gr HP combo for coyotes or a .22Mag when specifically trying to target cats. If I plan on calling where wolf sign is abundant, I pack a .243 with 70gr or 80gr soft points.

Last year wolves took a deer, and the year before a moose, on the ice.

In the early winter, when the ice is still relatively free of snow, they seem to have developed the tactic of driving an animal onto the lake, where their hooves cannot get a good purchase to defend or run. Then it is only a matter of time. It's an amazing thing to see, but not for faint hearts.

The last wolf I shot was out on the frozen Fraser River between McBride and Prince George, BC.

It had chased a med sized moose out onto the river and was circling it when we spotted the moose then we spotted the wolf running around it they were appr 1000 yards away from us.

Could only get to 500 yards where we settled into the snow on the river bank and watched after about 10 minutes the wolf stopped circling the moose walked to the otehr side of the river and headed upstream I shot it when it was directly across from us.

This was only one wolf and when we dragged the wolf out we could see where the wolf had been chasing the moose thru the 2 - 3' of snow they had circled everywhere that moose must have been completely worn out when the wolf gave up.

There was appr 2-3 feet of snow on the land but the river was completely free of snow.

Coyotes will do the same with caribou here on the Rock.

ive seen 2 dumped, one with a 180gr core-loct out of a 300win and one with a 168ttsx from a 30-06. both tipped right over with out a kick. a neat trophy for any one for sure.

Shooting wolves can mean a lot of different methods. If I saw a wolf at 500 yards I would just give him some Kentucky elevation, maybe some windage, and let fly. I once killed a wolf with what looked like a five foot hold over with my 30-06. And please, don't someone tell me that's not ethical, or any other critizism, that is what I would, and have done on several occasions, and that is what many other people I knew did.
That is why I always say to use a heavy calibre for wolves. The little 22 centre fires are great, of course, in the boiler room, but not if the hit is 10 inches or two feet back of that. Wolves are often shot at on the go, where any hit is a good hit.
And Popcan, you will see in the book that I give some examples of wolves chasing the moose onto the ice surface!

Seems to be a hitch in the reg's in my view then, since the majority of people here, myself included, are claiming that a non-small game rifle is necessary for shooting wolves. Wolf season opens on Sept 15 and carries on through till the end of March. So for the first month of wolf season I would have to have a bear tag to carry a rifle, then a moose tag......

You could buy the bear tag. However, if you are then big game hunting, you must wear blaze orange...
