If you could only take one rifle on a moose hunt where you could run into a grizz, which one.??
Caliber, bullet weight and style.........

My choice .338 Winchester mag and 225 grain Nosler Partition's....:)

45-70 loaded to the nutz with 405g bullet or maybe a 420g hard cast. No scope either, but around here when hunting in grizzly and moose territory there is no need for one, Shots are rarely over 200. And if you run into a grizz it will probably be no farther than 20-30 yards if not much closer.

Rem 7600, 35 Whelen, 250gr Hornady SP loaded to 2600-2650fps with 60.0gr RL-15.
Shoots flat like a laser and hits like a freight train.
First 3 shots go into 0.75" at 100m. Moose and Elk out to 400m are easy pickings.
Haven't shot a Bear yet. Perhaps someday I'll get around to it.
Good Luck
John

Your first choice, 338 Win Mag, 225 Nos parts = excellent choice. I would use the 338 Win Mag on darn near everything deer sized and over because it is so versatile and meat damage, with good bullets is mimimal. I honestly just hate the vicous recoil so much that I developed a flinch. bearhunter

I would hardly call the recoil of the .338 "Vicious". If it was for you, the rifle didn't fit you properly.

If it's heavy bush, how about a quick little lever gun in .450 Marlin? I don't have one of these (yet) but it sure looks appealing!

This year it'll be .378 with 300 TSX at 3050 fps. Dustin you don't need to hunt with slower runners you just need to trip them when the runnin starts.

Well, I know this will not sit well with most but having killed a 6 foot black bear at 7 yrds with it and not having a 45-70 I will take my 6.5x55 full military M38 swede loaded with a norman alaskan at 2650. Why? like I said I do not have a 45-70 (yet) but most importantly I trust this gun, know how to shoot it and can hit the bear exactly where I want to.
Worst feeling I ever had was being in the willows with a bear that was protecting a dead fawn, I had a scoped 30-06 loaded hot with a quality 200 grain bullet. The rifle was scoped and I had never shot it at a 10 yrd target. I felt scared and would have traded it for a lightly loaded, open sighted swede in a heart beat. Luckily for me I did not have to start shooting.
Trust in a rifle and practice with it to me out wiegh all other considerations. The penetration of the high BC 160 grain bullet is also important so is the ability to load/top up a the magazine with stripper clips.
Even with a .470 nitro bear killing can be a protracted battle. If I was choosing a firearm strictly for bear defense It would always be my 870 loaded with 2 3/4 slugs X 6. But for hunting/protection mauser all the way. 2nd chose would be a no.4 SMLE. fast and lots of bullets.

Naturally the .375 H&H is the best choice. Loaded with 300gr Partitions. The "light" version - aka: .338 Win Mag - would also do.:p ;)
